Australia's Mastermyne Awarded AUD 80 Million Coal Mine Restart Services Contract

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 9, Australian underground mining contractor Mastermyne Group signed a mining services contract with GMT Mining for the Tahmoor coal mine in New South Wales, with an initial term of 2 years and expected total revenue of approximately AUD 80 million. The contract includes two extension options of 2 years each; if fully exercised, cumulative contract revenue over 6 years could reach up to AUD 240 million. The contract covers underground mining services required for mine restart and subsequent operations, and is expected to create more than 160 new jobs.

Tahmoor is an underground metallurgical coal mine located in the Illawarra region of New South Wales. On October 7, 2026, a consortium composed of M Resources and Golden Energy and Resources completed the acquisition of the mine, with GM3 responsible for subsequent operations. M Resources holds a 30% interest in the project, and Golden Energy and Resources holds a 70% interest.

The New South Wales government announced on October 7 that approximately 150 employees had returned to the mine to carry out partial mining work. The new operator plans to continue recalling employees over the coming months to advance a full resumption of mining. After the mine acquisition was completed, the related outstanding mining royalties were also repaid.

Mastermyne also provides mining services for the Appin and Dendrobium underground coal mines operated by GM3. Among these, the Appin contract began execution in May 2025, and the Dendrobium contract started in September 2026. After mobilization for the Tahmoor contract is completed, Mastermyne expects its total workforce to exceed 1,000 employees, with more than 500 employees across three mine projects in the Illawarra region.
