en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 14, Australian telecommunications operator Optus and Sweden's Ericsson announced that the two parties had completed the deployment of the Indoor Fusion 8828 indoor communications system at an Optus store in Coffs Harbour, New South Wales, Australia, marking the first practical application of the equipment in Australia. The site is equipped with the Indoor Fusion Unit 8828 and the Radio Dot 4455 distributed antenna system, supporting 4G and 5G mobile communications services. According to the equipment's design parameters, a single system can connect up to 8 Radio Dot units, covering an area of up to 8,000 square meters.

Optus and Ericsson Deploy Indoor Fusion 8828 to Boost 5G Coverage in Australia

This deployment adopts Ericsson's indoor fusion communications architecture, integrating the baseband processing unit and the indoor radio unit into a single device, and achieving indoor signal distribution through the Radio Dot system. The equipment uses AC power supply, supports wall-mounted installation and multi-operator access, and is designed for application scenarios including shopping malls, hospitals, retail stores, warehouses, and small and medium-sized commercial buildings.

The system uses three frequency bands—3.5GHz, 2.1GHz, and 1.8GHz—in the Optus network, respectively handling the transmission of relevant 4G and 5G services. The equipment combination is aimed at buildings where traditional distributed antenna systems are inconvenient to deploy, supporting services such as indoor voice calls, mobile data transmission, video streaming, and mobile payments.

Optus and Ericsson have previously carried out multiple 5G network technology collaborations. In 2024, the two parties introduced the 5G Radio Dot System supporting multi-operator access; in March 2026, they conducted testing of AI-based radio access network link adaptation technology on Optus's live network. Under medium-to-low radio signal quality conditions, the test achieved a cell-level throughput gain of more than 20%. This Coffs Harbour deployment extends the collaboration to the practical installation and application of indoor wireless coverage equipment.
