en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 16, Sinopec announced that the million-tonne-scale low-concentration carbon dioxide capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) full-chain demonstration project in Shengli Oilfield, Shandong Province, has started construction and is scheduled to be completed and put into operation by the end of 2028. The project uses flue gas from coal-fired units of Shengli Power Plant as its carbon dioxide source, with a designed annual capture capacity of 1 million tonnes. It includes supporting construction of 98.8 MW wind power facilities and will inject captured carbon dioxide through more than 70 injection wells into oil reservoirs for enhanced oil recovery and underground storage.

The capture section of the project is built on Units 3 and 4 of Phase II of Shengli Power Plant, both coal-fired generating units with an installed capacity of 300 MW each, supported by boilers with a single-unit evaporation capacity of 1,025 tonnes per hour. The project will construct one carbon dioxide capture head station and one liquefaction station. The capture head station adopts a chemical absorption process and is equipped with a flue gas deep purification tower, absorber, regenerator, lean-rich solution heat exchanger and carbon dioxide compressor. The compressor has a designed outlet pressure of 4.6 MPa and an outlet temperature of 40 degrees Celsius. The liquefaction station is equipped with refrigeration, storage and loading facilities, with a designed liquid carbon dioxide output of approximately 3,000 tonnes per day.

The capture section previously received approval of its feasibility study report from Sinopec, with approval document number Sinopec Ji [2026] No. 80. The project owner is Shengli Power Plant of Sinopec Group Shengli Petroleum Administration Co., Ltd. Construction funds consist of bank loans and enterprise self-raised funds, at proportions of 70% and 30% respectively. In the general contracting tender for the capture section launched in September 2026, the estimated amount for Lot One was 778.95 million yuan (excluding tax), with a planned construction period of 814 days.

The carbon dioxide captured by the project will be used for enhanced oil recovery and storage in different types of reservoirs in Shengli Oilfield, with injection targets covering beach-bar sand reservoirs, turbidite reservoirs and shale oil reservoirs. The supporting green electricity direct supply system is planned to install 13 wind turbine generators with a total installed capacity of 98.8 MW and an estimated annual power generation of 217 million kWh, supplying power to the carbon capture facility through direct connection lines and, together with energy storage facilities, forming an integrated configuration of wind power, energy storage, direct connection lines and carbon capture facilities.
