Finland's P2X renewable synthetic methane injected into natural gas grid for the first time
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 15, Gasgrid, Finland's natural gas transmission system operator, announced that P2X Solutions' production facility in Harjavalta has begun injecting renewable synthetic methane into the Finnish natural gas grid and delivering it to the European market via the Balticconnector pipeline. Gasgrid simultaneously issued Finland's first renewable synthetic methane guarantees of origin for the synthetic methane produced at the facility. The project has thus entered the grid transmission and commercial sales phase.

The production facility built by P2X Solutions in Harjavalta was commissioned in 2025 and is equipped with a 20 MW electrolyzer and associated methanation unit. The facility uses renewable electricity to produce hydrogen, which is then subjected to a methanation reaction with captured biogenic carbon dioxide to produce synthetic methane that can be transported through existing natural gas infrastructure. The fuel produced can supply domestic users in Finland and enter other European markets via the cross-border natural gas grid.
Gasgrid operates Finland's natural gas transmission system and is responsible for the registration of renewable gas guarantees of origin and the issuance of certificates. The company has been engaged in biomethane origin certification for nearly five years and in October 2025 issued Finland's first hydrogen guarantees of origin for the renewable hydrogen produced by P2X Solutions in Harjavalta. The newly added synthetic methane certificates record the renewable origin and quantity of the corresponding energy and can be used for certification of trading and consumption of the relevant fuels.
In August 2026, P2X Solutions signed long-term synthetic methane supply agreements with avanca Energy AG and Alternoil, with deliveries scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter. The initial supply under the agreements targets the heavy-duty road transport market, with the fuel planned to be provided to heavy truck users through Alternoil's REEFUEL refueling network. The parties have also set a target of expanding subsequent delivery volumes to ten times the 2026 level.
