Wedoany.com Report-Jul. 27, Irish company DP Energy is developing the Windy Plains Renewable Energy Park, a 1,400-megawatt wind farm located 40 kilometers southeast of Julia Creek in McKinlay Shire, Queensland, Australia. The project will include 197 wind turbines, supported by battery energy storage systems with a capacity of approximately 500 MW and 2,000 megawatt-hours, enhancing energy reliability and storage.

The site’s suitability stems from its favorable conditions, including strong wind speeds, large land areas with few nearby residences, and flat terrain, which supports cost-effective construction. Its proximity to the CopperString transmission line, currently under development by Powerlink Queensland, further enhances its viability. These factors position the Windy Plains project as a strategic addition to Queensland’s renewable energy infrastructure.

Currently in the feasibility stage, the project involves high-level assessments of environmental, cultural heritage, and technical aspects. DP Energy is conducting detailed studies and engaging with stakeholders to secure approvals from Queensland and Commonwealth regulators. The company has initiated discussions with local parties, including McKinlay Shire Council, Queensland government agencies, First Nations communities, and other relevant groups, to ensure community input and support.

The company is also exploring additional early-stage projects, primarily in New South Wales and Queensland, reinforcing its commitment to advancing renewable energy across the country.
