Wedoany.com Report-Aug. 11, Vietnam’s demand for imported grains is increasing as local corn and rice production declines, with farmers favoring more lucrative crops. A USDA Foreign Agricultural Service report, dated August 6, 2025, forecasts corn imports at 12.2 million tonnes for FY2024/25, while domestic corn production is expected to fall to 4.1 million tonnes, down 0.2 million tonnes from the prior year.
Rice output is projected to decrease to 6.79 million tonnes in FY2025/26, compared to 6.95 million tonnes in FY2024/25 and 7.11 million tonnes in FY2023/24. To offset this, raw rice imports from Cambodia rose 54% in the first half of 2025, boosting rice export projections to 8.5 million tonnes for the 2024/25 marketing year.
With no domestic wheat production, Vietnam’s food industry relies on imports, forecasted at 5.72 million tonnes for 2024/25. Australia, Ukraine, and Brazil are key suppliers, meeting steady demand from local processors.
Growing livestock production, particularly in pig and poultry sectors, is increasing compound feed demand, projected at 28.7 million tonnes in 2025 and 29.5 million tonnes in 2026. Maize, making up 85–88% of feed consumption, highlights Vietnam’s reliance on imports amid declining local production and rising exports of ingredients like cassava and rice bran.
