Wedoany.com Report-Aug. 26, SD Guthrie and Gamuda Energy have announced a strategic partnership to jointly develop, own, and operate a large-scale portfolio of solar power assets, including energy storage systems, with a combined target capacity of 1.2 gigawatts (GW) in Malaysia. The initiative brings together Guthrie’s extensive land resources across the country and Gamuda’s expertise in renewable energy projects, aiming to accelerate Malaysia’s energy transition.

The partners will initially focus on identifying Guthrie’s underutilised land assets nationwide to evaluate their suitability for solar power development.

The collaboration is designed to meet the growing demand for renewable energy, particularly from industrial and data centre sectors. By integrating Guthrie’s strategic land assets with Gamuda’s technical experience, the two companies seek to fast-track the delivery of scalable renewable energy solutions that align with Malaysia’s sustainability objectives.

Guthrie Group managing director, Datuk Mohamad Helmy Othman Basha, emphasized the importance of the partnership: “Renewable Energy is one of two new business verticals that we have identified as a growing pillar of Guthrie’s future. It is critical, both as a new and sustainable revenue stream and for our net-zero target. At a national scale, it will help to advance Malaysia’s efforts to decarbonise its electricity sector. With Gamuda, we are continuing our strategy of partnering with established and experienced players to provide a strategic pathway for Guthrie to accelerate our expansion into these new verticals.”

As part of the collaboration, Guthrie is preparing to commence operations of its first Corporate Green Power Programme (CGPP) solar plant in Bukit Selarong, Kedah. The 15 megawatt (MW) facility is scheduled to begin operations by the fourth quarter of 2025. This project is expected to be an important step in strengthening Guthrie’s position in the renewable energy sector while supporting Malaysia’s green energy goals.

Mohamad Helmy also noted the value-creation potential of the initiative, saying the partnership can “create value by meeting renewable energy demand from both public and private sector users under frameworks such as the Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme (CRESS).” By contributing clean power to a broad range of users, the projects are positioned to enhance the long-term value of Guthrie’s land portfolio while supporting wider adoption of renewable energy in Malaysia.

In the initial phase, the collaboration will focus on identifying underutilised land assets within Guthrie’s nationwide portfolio to assess their suitability for solar power development. This approach aims to optimize land use while establishing a foundation for large-scale clean energy projects. Further updates and details on the progress of this partnership will be announced in due course.

Through this joint effort, SD Guthrie and Gamuda Energy are setting the stage for a significant expansion of solar capacity in Malaysia. The combination of strategic land resources and technical expertise is expected to play a key role in advancing renewable energy adoption, supporting national sustainability goals, and strengthening the resilience of the country’s power infrastructure.
