Wedoany.com Report-Sept. 29, KazMunayGas (KMG) and Italy’s Eni S.p.A. have successfully commissioned a 50 MW solar power plant in Zhanaozen, Mangistau region, Kazakhstan. The opening ceremony, attended by key figures including KMG Chairman Askhat Khassenov, Majilis deputy Edil Zhanbyrshin, Mangistau regional deputy governor Erbol Izbergenov, Samruk-Kazyna’s Zhandos Kairgeldi, Eni Kazakhstan head Seger Hoytink, Plenitude Kazakhstan managing director Federico Pulesse, and Plenitude Renewable Energy Director Alessandro Della Soppa, marked the completion of the first phase of a 247 MW hybrid power project.

The solar facility, spanning 80 hectares, features over 80,000 bifacial solar panels from LONGi, designed to generate electricity from both sides. Expected to produce approximately 86 million kWh of clean energy annually, the plant supports KMG subsidiaries like OzenMunayGas and KazGPZ, ensuring stable operations. “This project is the result of long-term cooperation between KMG and Eni and directly contributes to Kazakhstan’s carbon neutrality strategy by 2060. With state-level support, the hybrid plant will enable around 40% of electricity to come from renewable sources, significantly reducing the carbon footprint while ensuring reliable oil and gas production,” said KMG Chairman Askhat Khassenov.

The project employed up to 250 workers during construction, with 122 specialists now operating the gas plant site. The hybrid model integrates solar, wind, and gas generation to provide reliable energy under varying weather conditions, aligning with KMG’s Low-Carbon Development Program.

KMG and Eni plan to advance the project with a 77 MW wind farm and a 120 MW gas power station, set for completion in 2026. This hybrid complex will balance renewable and conventional energy sources, enhancing efficiency and sustainability. The initiative strengthens Kazakhstan’s renewable energy sector, supporting clean energy production while maintaining operational reliability for its oil and gas industry.

The collaboration between KMG and Eni, supported by advanced technology and local expertise, positions Zhanaozen as a hub for innovative energy solutions. The project’s timely completion highlights the professionalism of the teams involved and contributes to Kazakhstan’s long-term goal of reducing carbon emissions while meeting energy demands.
