Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 3, Livium Ltd (ASX: LIT), Australia’s leading battery recycling company specializing in clean energy waste, announced that it has been granted an Australian patent for its innovative wet shredding and separation process used in lithium-ion battery recycling. The patent, secured through its wholly owned subsidiary Resource Conservation and Recycling Corporation Pty Ltd (RCARC), provides intellectual property protection until 2041. The company described the patent as a significant strategic asset, supporting its long-term roadmap for lithium-ion battery recycling in Australia and strengthening its technological leadership in the clean energy sector.

The patented technology covers the wet shredding and separation of valuable electrode materials, commonly referred to as “black mass,” as well as metals extracted from used lithium-ion batteries. In contrast to conventional dry shredding methods, which are more susceptible to thermal incidents, Livium’s wet shredding approach employs water to form an aqueous slurry. This process helps mitigate fire risks, effectively captures volatile substances, and enhances both safety and operational efficiency during material recovery.

According to Livium, the wet shredding process not only improves workplace safety but also ensures the production of high-quality black mass that can be further refined into critical battery materials such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel. These materials are vital for supporting the growing demand in electric vehicles and renewable energy storage systems, contributing to a more sustainable circular economy.

Livium CEO and Managing Director Simon Linge said: “This patent milestone reinforces the company’s commitment to safe and efficient clean energy resource recovery. The wet-process route underpins Envirostream’s operations, minimizing fire risks while producing high-quality black mass for downstream refining.” He added that this innovation represents an important step in advancing responsible recycling practices within the battery industry.

The newly granted patent complements Livium’s broader technology portfolio, which includes the Rare Earth Elements (REE) processing technology developed in collaboration with the University of Melbourne. Together, these innovations strengthen Livium’s capabilities across critical mineral recovery and reinforce its strategic goal of building a fully integrated clean energy materials recycling network in Australia.

Livium’s technological advancements come at a time when demand for sustainable battery recycling is rapidly increasing due to the global expansion of electric mobility and renewable energy systems. The company continues to invest in research and development aimed at improving process efficiency, reducing environmental impact, and supporting Australia’s transition toward cleaner energy solutions.

With patent protection extending to 2041, Livium plans to further develop and deploy its wet shredding and separation technology across its operations, ensuring safer, more efficient, and environmentally responsible recycling of lithium-ion batteries. The achievement marks a key milestone in Livium’s mission to enhance the recovery of valuable resources while supporting a sustainable and circular energy economy.
