Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 4, The Henkel Packaging RecycLab has officially begun operations in China, marking an important milestone in promoting packaging innovation and circular economy practices. The specialized facility focuses on evaluating adhesive solutions that enhance packaging recyclability and sustainability. Through localized testing and process optimization, the RecycLab will strengthen Henkel’s capabilities in serving customers across China and the broader Asia-Pacific region. A delegation led by Li Hua, Chairperson of the China Packaging Federation (CPF), visited the lab and jointly launched the 2025 “Green Packaging Recycling China Tour” with Henkel.
In response to global sustainability goals and regulatory developments such as the upcoming EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), Henkel established the Packaging RecycLab in Shanghai. The facility integrates development, testing, evaluation, and collaboration between industry, academia, and research institutions. Built upon the internationally recognized CEPI/4Evergreen testing framework, the RecycLab simulates industrial recycling processes to generate data that supports packaging design optimization. This enables customers to develop “design-for-recycling” solutions and supports the creation of a closed-loop packaging system.
Dr. Alejandro Schoenhoff, Head of Packaging APAC at Henkel Adhesive Technologies, emphasized the importance of the Chinese market in advancing sustainability. He stated: “The launch of the Henkel Packaging RecycLab in China is a key strategic step, highlighting our long-term commitment. Henkel is taking concrete actions to lead packaging transformation by helping customers optimize material selection and packaging structures through systematic technical services. This initiative aims to reduce environmental footprints and achieve mutual economic and ecological benefits.”
During the visit, Li Hua and the CPF delegation toured the facility and discussed potential areas for future cooperation. Li Hua noted Henkel’s active role in supporting China’s packaging industry, saying: “The Packaging RecycLab combines an international perspective with local market needs. It will serve as valuable infrastructure for the entire industry.”
Yanjie Zheng, APAC Sustainability Manager for Henkel Packaging Adhesives, presented Henkel’s strategic approach to sustainability in the packaging sector. He addressed challenges throughout the packaging lifecycle—from sustainable design and carbon reduction to recycling and compliance—and demonstrated how Henkel’s integrated solutions help accelerate the industry’s progress toward sustainability.
A highlight of the CPF visit was the torch relay ceremony for the 2025 “Green Packaging Recycling China Tour.” The campaign, initiated by CPF in 2023, first passed its torch to Henkel during the China International Import Expo. Since then, it has inspired numerous enterprises across the value chain to enhance packaging sustainability.
The Henkel Packaging RecycLab offers China’s packaging industry a world-class platform for recycling verification and innovation. Henkel plans to continue investing in local innovation and expanding cooperation with industry partners. Through joint efforts across the value chain, the company aims to further advance the green transformation and sustainable development of China’s packaging industry.
