Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 18, Alstom said on Monday that it has reached an agreement to supply Ukrainian Railways with 55 locomotives under a contract valued at approximately 470 million euros ($545 million). The French rail transport manufacturer stated that the order involves Traxx locomotives, a type widely used in freight and passenger services across several regions. According to the company, this contract marks a significant development in its cooperation with Ukraine’s national railway operator.

The delivery schedule outlined by Alstom indicates that locomotive shipments are expected to begin in 2027. The company said this timeline will allow for production planning, preparation of technical support, and coordination with Ukrainian Railways on integration requirements. Alstom added that the agreement follows several earlier discussions on strengthening rail capacity and updating rolling stock.
The company said the financing for the locomotive order will come mainly from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the World Bank. These institutions have supported rail-related projects in various countries, focusing on infrastructure development, fleet renewal, and operational efficiency. Alstom stated that their participation in this contract reflects ongoing efforts to assist major railway systems in modernising equipment.
Alstom noted that the Traxx series has been designed for adaptability, with features that can be configured for different rail networks. The company said that the locomotives’ energy efficiency, maintenance requirements, and operational capability make them suitable for long-distance transport services. It added that preparations will include training programmes and technical support packages to ensure smooth deployment after the start of deliveries.
The contract is part of broader initiatives by Ukrainian Railways to update its locomotive fleet and expand transport capacity. Alstom said this cooperation also includes long-term service commitments, supported by the company’s established presence in the European rail market. The manufacturer highlighted that the agreement builds on its experience supplying rail equipment to multiple countries and its role in supporting major infrastructure upgrades.
Although the financial structure relies largely on international lenders, Alstom said the project will involve coordination among its engineering, manufacturing, and supply-chain teams in Europe. The firm stated that production will follow its standard procedures for safety, efficiency, and quality control. Ukrainian Railways will work with Alstom during the implementation phase to prepare operational plans for the new locomotives.
Alstom also noted that the programme is expected to contribute to improved transport reliability once deliveries begin. As part of the arrangement, the company will provide ongoing support to ensure the locomotives meet performance expectations throughout their operational life cycle.
The announcement reflects Alstom’s continued activity in supplying rail transport solutions internationally and its emphasis on long-term partnerships within the sector.
