Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 24, Aasen Shipping, based in Mosterhamn, Norway, has placed an order with Royal Bodewes shipyard in the Netherlands for a sixth hybrid-powered, methanol-ready self-discharging bulk carrier.

The new vessel, measuring 119.95 metres in length with 9,400 dwt capacity, continues the series of five identical battery-hybrid ships previously contracted by Aasen between 2020 and 2023. Delivery is scheduled for late 2027.

Like its sister vessels, the newbuild will incorporate a substantial battery installation for peak-shaving of main and auxiliary engines, together with fully electric cargo-handling equipment. This configuration enables zero-emission loading and discharging operations when connected to shore power in suitably equipped ports. The design also includes methanol-ready features to facilitate potential future fuel conversion.

Founded in 1981 and remaining family-owned, Aasen Shipping currently operates a fleet of approximately 15 self-discharging bulk carriers ranging from 6,000 dwt to 9,500 dwt. The company focuses on efficient coastal and short-sea transport of bulk cargoes, primarily serving northern European markets.

The repeated order with Royal Bodewes reflects continued confidence in the yard’s execution of this specialised hybrid design, which combines low-emission operation with high operational flexibility. By progressively renewing and expanding its fleet with vessels offering both battery-hybrid capability and future fuel adaptability, Aasen Shipping strengthens its ability to meet evolving environmental standards while maintaining reliable service for customers.

This latest contract brings Aasen’s total commitment at Royal Bodewes to six vessels of the same advanced specification, confirming the success of the original concept introduced with the first delivery in the series. The gradual fleet modernisation supports sustained competitiveness in a segment where operational efficiency and environmental performance are increasingly important considerations.
