Wedoany.com Report-Dec.31, At 14:00 local time on December 29, as the molten copper from the anode furnace slowly flowed out and the first batch of anode plates was successfully cast, the Democratic Republic of the Congo's Kamoa-Kakula 500,000 tpa one-step copper smelter project, for which China Nerin Engineering Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "China Nerin") provided full-process EPCM services, was successfully commissioned. The entire process was successfully connected, marking the official entry of this modern green copper smelter—a global leader in scale and an industry leader in technology—into the trial production phase.
The project is designed to produce 500,000 tons of anode plates and 800,000 tons of sulfuric acid as a by-product annually. This successful commissioning marks a significant technological breakthrough in processing high-grade copper concentrate in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, achieved through the one-step copper smelting process jointly customized by China Nerin, Zijin Mining, Ivanhoe Mines, and Kamoa Copper. This technical solution not only provides a replicable and scalable successful model for similar mining enterprises globally but also sets a benchmark for technological application and industrial upgrading in the copper smelting industry.
Upon reaching full production capacity, the project will yield significant benefits, saving considerable freight costs annually. The by-product sulfuric acid will also generate substantial economic returns. Meanwhile, the smelter will directly create nearly a thousand local jobs, effectively drive the development of supporting community industries, and inject strong momentum into local economic growth.
Under the coordination of Kamoa Copper, China Nerin assembled a top-tier domestic flash smelting expert team and collaborated with all participating construction units to tackle challenges. Leveraging profound technical expertise and excellent operational management capabilities, the team successfully overcame multiple difficulties in overseas construction, ensuring the steady progress of the trial production phase and setting several global records for the commissioning of one-step copper smelting facilities. Currently, the smelter is operating stably, continuously optimizing process parameters, and steadily progressing towards fully achieving its design targets.
As the EPCM service provider for the project, China Nerin was deeply involved in the entire project lifecycle, comprehensively undertaking full-chain services from preliminary planning, engineering design, procurement management, and construction management to commissioning, startup support, and subsequent technical support, covering all areas including smelting, sulfuric acid, and slag processing. The company also supplied key equipment such as electric furnaces, anode furnaces, and the NDI series of intelligent expert systems, which incorporate core patented technologies. Since signing the contract, the Nerin team has fully leveraged its years of technical expertise in flash smelting and rich experience in international project management. They directly addressed multiple challenges posed by regional differences in overseas construction and supply chain coordination, completing the project construction and commissioning on schedule with high quality. During the trial production phase, the team dispatched over a hundred domestic copper smelting experts and technicians to provide on-site support throughout the process. Their precise technical guidance and efficient problem-solving laid a crucial foundation for the successful commissioning of the project.
The successful operation of this project collectively showcases China Nerin's profound technical expertise in the copper smelting industry, its strong manufacturing and construction synergy capabilities, and its excellent full-cycle operational management level. It deepens the integrated export of Chinese technology, supply chains, and industrial systems. As a landmark achievement in implementing the Belt and Road Initiative and deepening China-Africa mining cooperation, the project has made a significant contribution to China-Africa economic and trade cooperation and technical exchanges.
In the future, China Nerin will continue to provide full-cycle technical support for the Kamoa smelter, helping to build it into a model of a world-class smelter. The company will continue to contribute "Nerin's strength" in promoting the green transformation of the global copper industry, enhancing the well-being of local enterprises and communities, and elevating the international influence of Chinese technology and equipment.
