Recently, the Saudi Jeddah Development Authority has re-launched the tender for preliminary design consultation of the Metro Blue Line. Interested parties are required to submit their proposals by March of this year. The planned Metro Blue Line is approximately 35 kilometers long, connecting Jeddah International Airport with the Haramain High-Speed Railway Station, and is proposed to have 18 stations.

The Jeddah Metro Blue Line was first proposed in the early 2010s and was incorporated into Saudi Arabia's broader public transportation plan between 2013 and 2014. In 2014, France's Systra was appointed to conduct preliminary engineering design; in the same year, the US-based AECOM secured a 276 million Saudi Riyal contract for project pre-management consultation; and in 2015, the UK's Foster + Partners was selected to design the metro stations. However, following the sharp decline in global oil prices between 2014 and 2016, the Saudi government adjusted its spending priorities, leading to a prolonged period of stagnation for the project.

According to information provided by Jeddah Transport Company, the initial project plan includes four metro lines with a total length exceeding 161 kilometers, equipped with 197 metro trains. Besides the Blue Line, the other three lines include: the Orange Line (44.8 kilometers long, passing through Al-Madinah Road and Old Mecca Road, with a total of 29 stations); the Green Line (17 kilometers long, running through the city center, with 9 stations); and the Red Line (59.7 kilometers long, connecting King Abdullah Sports City to Old Mecca Street, with 25 stations).
