Wedoany.com Report on Feb 7th, representatives and staff from the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) held a meeting with the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs to discuss the latest regulatory requirements for the use of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS, commonly known as drones) in the transportation construction sector.
With the implementation of the American Security Drone Act in December 2025, the use of drones from specific sources in federally funded projects has been restricted. Attendees included Skip Powe from the Alabama Road Builders Association and Whitney Williams from the Carolinas AGC. Both expressed support for the safety goals of the regulations but noted the need for more specific operational guidance for the transportation construction industry.
Drone technology plays a crucial role in transportation construction, being widely used for surveying, engineering inspections, and on-site safety management. Industry representatives cautioned that without clear implementation guidance, drone-related operations could face disruption risks as contractors evaluate compliance or procure alternative equipment. To address this, ARTBA has put forward three core requests: a 180-day policy grace period, an officially recognized list of compliant drone products, and additional compliance guidance documents. The association has already communicated this to the Federal Highway Administration and will continue to follow up on the matter, keeping its members informed of progress.
