An Irish motorway project connecting Cork and Ringaskiddy has secured €140 million in funding, with a total project cost of €456 million and an expected completion time of 36 months. This funding will advance the construction of the M28 motorway, a significant component of Ireland's infrastructure development.

The Cork motorway project comprises two associated works: an 11-kilometer section from the N40 Bloomfield Interchange to Barnahely, constructed by BAM, and a 1.5-kilometer Ringaskiddy Relief Road, constructed by Sorensen. BAM's €206 million construction contract has been awarded by Cork County Council, which also appointed AtkinsRéalis to provide comprehensive design services, including low-carbon design and construction techniques.

AtkinsRéalis has also introduced digital information management requirements for the project, ensuring efficient operation during both the design and construction phases. As one of Ireland's first major infrastructure projects to require the development of a climate change adaptation plan for the construction phase, this Cork motorway project emphasizes environmental protection and sustainability.

The M28 is a designated part of the core Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), an EU strategic framework aimed at connecting ports and major logistics hubs. The construction of the new link will support the relocation of the Port of Cork to Ringaskiddy and is funded by the Irish Department of Transport through Transport Infrastructure Ireland.

Upon completion, the Cork motorway project is expected to alleviate traffic congestion, improve road safety, reduce travel times for drivers, and strengthen Cork's role in European trade and logistics. Additionally, the Irish government has allocated a budget exceeding €60 million for road projects in Galway City and County for 2026, including the Galway City Bypass and other safety improvement works.
