M.H. Rhodes, a division of Capewell Components Company, LLC, has been handcrafting mechanical timers and time switches since 1930. In the late 1920s, Mark Rhodes, Sr., who owned a business making straight razor sharpening tools, was losing ground to a big competitor, Gillette, and its new disposable razors. One night, as he turned off the light to go to bed, he stubbed his toe on the bedpost. He broke his toe _ but at the same time stumbled on a huge break for his company. Had there been a delay in the light, he thought, he wouldn’t have hurt himself. He soon developed a prototype, the first of its kind. The time delay worked with the toggle switch to delay the “on” or “off ” from 15 seconds to 19 hours. This was the first product for M.H. Rhodes, which soon began manufacturing timing devices. We see evidence of Rhodes’ invention today in programmable timers for holiday lighting and security systems, to name a few. This invention also became the foundation for energy-efficient thinking that began in the ‘70s and continues today. M.H. Rhodes opened for business at the beginning of the Great Depression.
