MHI manufactures 700 items i......Since its foundation in 1884, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has sought to pioneer new approaches to manufacturing, and has built the foundations for the development of the entire industry. MHI manufactures 700 items in a very broad range of fields, including aerospace rockets, power-generation facilities, ships, industrial equipment, and home air conditioners. With energy and environmental issues becoming challenges shared by the entire planet, we are contributing to society through our operations, for example, by providing a large number of green products to address issues in global society and by developing social and industrial infrastructure around the world. We see Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) as the axis of our management. Our policy is to contribute to social progress through our operations, complying with laws and regulations, and striking a balance between the global environment and economic activities. To promote CSR, we established "CSR Action Guidelines" in July 2007, which shows the principles to be followed by employees. We aim to become a company that pays constant attention to social viewpoints, fulfills social expectations, and thereby wins the trust of stakeholders. I foresee that MHI is going to face an increasingly challenging business environment going forward, with a rapid appreciation of the yen, a surge in prices of materials such as crude oil and steel products, and growing competition in global market. Nonetheless, with interest in the energy and environmental sectors growing in light of the development of the global economy and the issue of global warming, we see many outstanding business opportunities on the horizon. In this operating environment, to achieve sustainable growth, we established a new medium-term business plan called "2008 Medium-Term Business Plan (2008-2010)" in April 2008. Under the Plan, we are aiming at further global growth and higher profitability. We also seek to strengthen our manufacturing capabilities, which are at the core of the MHIs management, earn the trust of the community with our focus on CSR, and become a strong and agile global player. To achieve these targets, we will rapidly execute operations under our basic policies of pursuing "Global Growth in the Production Business" and "Business Process Reform." In pursuing "Global Growth in the Production Business", we will combine businesses that require large-scale investments from a long-term perspective and businesses that can achieve short-term returns in a balanced manner. Through "Business Process Reform", we will seek to develop a strong management structure that enables MHI to overcome the external environment by carrying out three initiatives: accelerating manufacturing reform, enhancing overseas work risk management and bolstering of the business promotion system.
