Just as the civilization the man moved forward with the development of iron, Korea’s economy flourished with the growth of POSCO The hope to develop the steel industry in Korea, once dashed by Japanese colonial rule, was revitalized with the establishment of plans to construct a general steelworks in the 1960’s. Starting literally from scratch with no capital, technology, or experience, President Tae Joon Park along with 39 employees established the Company on April 1, 1968. Thus began the journey towards completion of Integrated Works, following governmental policy focused on developing major infrastructures, including steel production, for modernization. Armed with a sense of duty not to squander even one penny that came from the sacrifice of our ancestors, all employees were strongly united and devoted to constructing a steelworks for the country, sleeping curled up in the construction site office called Rommel House and eating rice mixed with sand In 1973, the first production line manufacturing 1.03 million tons of crude steel was completed, and Pohang Works--with a 9.1 million-ton production line for crude steel--was established in 1983 after four expansions. To effectively handle the increasing domestic demand for steel production, POSCO faced a new challenge in bringing the myth of Yeongilman to Gwangyangman. Starting from Gwangyangs first plant in 1985 until the general completion ceremony in 1992, POSCO managed to construct an ultramodern steelworks that directly connects iron making, steelmaking, and rolling by filling in the seas. The Company also forged and established firm connections between industries, academics, and research with the founding of Pohang University of Science and Technology and the R&D Center for Industrial Science and Technology, in addition to an institute solely devoted to the development of its independent technologies The implementation of sustainable and efficient facilities and the increase in productivity of crude steel pushed POSCO to the top of the world steel industry in 1998. The year 1999 was witness to a total revamping of the Companys overall processes in procurement, production, and sales, and the construction of an integrated digital system. POSCO was privatized in 2000 and it is going forward to achieve the goal producing 50 million tons of crude steel as of 2007, and it is expanding production base in overseas countries such as Vietnam and India, processing to build integrated steel mill. Also, it developed innovative technology such as FINEX, post rip consolidating its leadership position in global technology. In addition, it increased overseas investment in order to secure a stable base for the supply of resources and raises the sales of high valued strategic products such as automotive steel and API steel substantially. POSCO does its best to have transparent corporate governance and to settle innovation as one of corporate cultures of POSCO. A step further, POSCO does not focus on economic profitability only, but it also emphasizes on sustainable management with environmental soundness and social responsibility in balance and harmony.
