Nick’s vast experience in piezoelectric sensor design dates back to 1959. He began his career in piezoelectric sensors working with a well-known sensor manufacturer in the Buffalo, New York area as a draftsman. He later went on to earn his bachelors degree in electrical engineering from The University of Buffalo. His career path took him to the eventual presidency of two major players in the piezo world. In 1980 Nick had the intestinal fortitude to form his own company (Nick named the company Dytran by combining the words dynamic and transducers). And so Dytran was born in the proverbial basement of Nick’s home in a suburb south of Buffalo. As they say, the rest is history!

Kunkle, to produce his patented Lock Up Safety for railroad use. This innovative new valve was so successful that virtually every railroad in the U.S., Canada and several other countries quickly adopted its use. E.B. Kunkle went on to produce over 100 patented inventions, providing the company with a varied product line of safety valves. Soon after E.B. Kunkles death in 1913, the company was purchased by Oscar A. Fox and renamed to Kunkle Valve Company. Kunkle Valve Division, located in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Black Mountain, North Carolina, USA. Kunkle Valve made several acquisitions during the mid-1940s, including the Star Brass Manufacturing Company of Boston in 1947. This acquisition added an entire line of engineered U.S. Navy approved relief valves that are still extensively used today aboard all types of naval vessels. An original 1895 drawing by E.B. Kunkle In the mid-1950s, Kunkle purchased railroad valve manufacturer J.E. Lonergan, strengthening the new corporations standing as a respected manufacturer of safety and relief valves. In November 1991, Kunkle Industries became a publicly held company following its purchase by Anderson Greenwood & Co. The pairing of the Kunkle and Lonergan spring-activated valves with the pilot-operated valves manufactured by Anderson Greenwood, resulted in a stronger market position for Kunkle in the relief valve industry. In September 1997, Kunkle Valve, as a part of Anderson Greenwood and Keystone, became a part of Tyco International Ltd. In addition to the above companies, Tycos Flow Control group includes many well established companies such as Grinnell, Mueller, Unistrut, Vanessa and Yarway.

The demand has been phenomenal with Big Ass Fans installed everywhere from Airports-to-Zoos worldwide. We entered the world in 1999 as the HVLS (High Volume/Low Speed) Fan Company, a nod to our technology. And, with each fan sold, we noticed people looking skyward in disbelief and uttering, “That sure is a big ass fan.” It didnt take us long to embrace the quirky name and become the Big Ass Fans Company. Soon afterwards, we began plastering our brand on everything from donkey-shaped squeeze toys, to the side of our Lexington, KY headquarters. Big Ass Fans logo merchandise quickly became a hot commodity in its own right. And, seeing an opportunity to do good, we decided to donate every merchandise-related penny to the Longhopes Donkey Shelter, a non-profit donkey rescue shelter. Sure, we have a funny name, but were grounded in science. Thats why we’ve won Plant Engineering’s Product of the Year award for 2002, 2003 and 2004. Locally, Big Ass Fans won the 2006 Kentucky Manufacturer of the Year and 2006 World Trade Success Awards. Everyone needs a hobby, we collect awards. We believe to know us is to love us. Thanks for stopping by.
