The project, which teamed Smart Fibres with BAE Systems and Aston University, led to the development and highly successful demonstration of a composite embedded optical fibre sensing system on a high performance yacht. This was a truly pioneering development and, recognised as such, featured on the BBCs Tomorrows World programme in 1999. In the following years, numerous successful super yacht installations were made, and the Company expanded its application domain into commercial marine, aerospace, oil & gas, wind and tidal power, civil engineering, infrastructure, automotive and transport. Today, the Company remains at the forefront of a new industry in optical fibre sensing seeded by its own early pioneering activities. It provides ISO 9001 certified services across the globe to hundreds of clients from blue-chip corporations and research institutes, to small companies developing niche applications. Smart Fibres technical strengths are maintained by on-going in-house and collaborative research and development projects, leading to continuous innovation, patent generation, and a range of products to suit the diverse needs of our clients and their markets.
