We started in 1968 with the invention of a device that would respond to sparks in pneumatic conveying and dust extraction systems. We applied these principles to the monitoring of flames and in 1974 the first such system was installed on a power station boiler. Since then many such systems have been installed around the world. We are now focused on the development of flame detection products for the fire protection industry.

We exist for our customers we are committed to them and we work to ensure that our actions are aligned to their needs. Tarmac has 135 quarries including 13 wharves, 73 asphalt plants, 172 concrete plants of which 15 are precast concrete sites and 36 recycling plants. Tarmac has 1,228 contracted hauliers. Tarmac has planted over 111,500 trees in the last five years, thats over 60 trees planted every single day. Over 14,000 metres of hedgerows have been planted in the UK by Tarmac in the last five years, an average of 54 metres planted every week. Many products we take for granted - from paper to glass, ice cream to toothpaste - are manufactured using materials derived from quarrying. Tarmac recycles around 200,000 tonnes of concrete every year - equivalent in weight to 500 jumbo jets. Tarmac recycles 1,940,000 tonnes of construction, demolition and excavation waste and uses 1,300,000 tonnes of this waste to restore our quarries every year. Last year, Tarmac manufactured eight million tonnes of asphalt, enough to pave the Great Wall of China ten times over. To build an average home takes approximately 60 tonnes aggregate. On average we use nearly 4 tonnes of aggregate per person per year. A typical family indirectly uses a lorry load of aggregates annually.

We operate as two divisions of specialised resource – Appliance Controls & Electronics. Both divisions are based at the St Austell site. We manufacture a complete range of automatic controls and equipment utilizing the very latest modern technology including microelectronics, CAD and a state of the art assembly and test plant at our site in St Austell, Cornwall. The commitment we have to the quality of our products and service is reflected in our Quality Assurance Control Standard BS EN ISO 9001:2000 and A class vendor rating awards. History... Teddington Refrigeration Controls and Teddington Appliance Controls were set up in Teddington in 1928 with a payroll of four, producing controls and automatic thermostats. The Company was known as British Thermostat Co. Limited. By 1931 the Company had expanded greatly and moved to new premises at Sunbury-on-Thames, with a payroll of 60. The variety of products grew and included refrigeration controls, car thermostats and seamless metallic bellows of various sizes, which were a speciality of the Company. In 1934 the Company collaborated with Rolls Royce to produce an experimental thermostat for their cars, and a prototype thermostat system that became the forerunner of nearly every system fitted to the Merlin engines during the war. Other equipment was produced for the Spitfire and Hurricane. During the war the Company grew considerably with a payroll of 2,300. After 1945 all aircraft work was moved to a factory in Merthyr and was known as Teddington Aircraft Controls Limited. The Sunbury factory reverted to its commercial refrigeration business. In 1951 an assembly Company was set up in France, but due to severe Italian competition production ceased in 1962 and the Company known as Teddington France S.A. confined itself to selling English made products. Due to a Government ban imposed on development in the South East a suitable site for expansion was sought elsewhere and finally St Austell was chosen and by 1967 the first factory section was completed. A further extension was started in 1968. In 1970 the British Thermostat Co. Limited Group was merged with United Gas Industries, and Teddington Aircraft Controls was sold in 1971. By 1974 all Teddington Autocontrols activities had been transferred to St Austell and the machine shop was transferred to a Government factory in Camborne. In 1979 the three Companies integrated into Teddington Appliance Controls and in the same year the Camborne factory was closed and component manufacture transferred to St Austell. In 1982 the Hanson Group purchased United Gas Industries. In 1986 it was decided to rationalise the existing factory and office space at St Austell and work started on re-building the upper factory area. In 1987 all the offices and machine shop moved into the new areas. In 1991 the Company acquired Teddington Industrial Equipment Limited. This led to the transfer to St Austell of the manufacture of Ministry of Defence Panels and additional engine protection controls. A management buy-out in 1993 formed a group of 10 companies including Teddington Controls Limited under SLD Holdings. In 1998 Teddington Controls Limited acquired Lizard Electronic Developments Limited, an electronics design and manufacturing company. Its production equipment and personnel were transferred to the St. Austell site. Vida Group, a group of companies focussed on measurement, monitoring and control, acquired the Company in February 2000. In October 2002, we saw an acquisition of Teddington Controls Ltd by Henderson Industries. Mr Philip Henderson currently operates as Managing Director/Chairman of the Company.
