The company was founded in October 1997 as a joint venture between the French Vallourec Group (55% of shares) and the German Mannesmannröhren-Werke GmbH (45% of shares) joining together all their production units and marketing interests for seamless hot rolled tubes and threaded oilfield tubulars (OCTG). In May 2000, the company took over the Brazilian company Mannesmann S.A. in Belo Horizonte, which has been renamed V & M do BRASIL S.A.
