Mitutoyos philosophy at that time was to make the best mechanical micrometer in the world. But also to produce them in quantities that made them affordable and available to all of manufacturing so they could improve the quality of the products they manufactured. This philosophy was expanded in the next several decades to include a wider product offering focused on mechanical, dimensional gaging products. Mitutoyo focused its R&D and production efforts on creating the most advanced micrometers, calipers, indicators and other measurement tools in the world. As electronic technology became more widespread in the 70s, Mitutoyo applied electronics to its line of dimensional gaging equipment to include electronic, or digital, measuring tools. During this time it also began to offer larger, more complex and more sensitive measuring instruments, including optical comparators, form measuring equipment, and coordinate measuring machines. As statistical process control (SPC) was introduced, Mitutoyo led the world in the development of output gages, interfaces, data collectors and analysis software to take advantage of this new metrology science. When the computer made its way into the field of metrology, Mitutoyo again shifted its focus to include this technology into its product offering and push measuring accuracies into the sub-micron range. Today, Mitutoyo presents its 6,000+ products as integrated, computer-based metrology systems, where they can be interconnected to form closed-loop-measuring networks. Mitutoyo America Corporation was formed in 1963 and is headquartered in Aurora, Illinois (just outside of Chicago). Mitutoyo America offers the full product line of precision measuring tools, instruments and equipment with a distribution network, training and education classes, software development, and service support to provide a comprehensive metrology organization. As the leading metrology company in the world, Mitutoyo is committed to future product development that applies breakthrough technologies to its full range of dimensional measurement tools, instruments and systems. Dr. Yehan Numata is also the founder of the Buddhist Canon Translation Project.

After 13 years of innovation and refinement, Carl Naylor was ready to form his own company. He had long been interested in the manufacture of pipe, having built his first machine to make straight lockseam pipe in 1912, while working in the sheet metal shop of Robertson Brothers Manufacturing company. By 1919, he had perfected the first machine ever to produce a lockseam spiral pipe. A pipe literally wound on a lathe-turned mandrel, with the edges interlocked into a rigid four-ply seam, a pipe with an accurate diameter—as round as the arbor on which it was turned. So it was on March 13, 1925 when Mr. Naylor formed Naylor Pipe Company. Starting in a small lockseam pipe fabricating shop in a corner building at 92nd and Avalon on Chicagos South Side, Mr. Naylor and a handful of employees began to produce a unique and distinctive pipe. Two years later, in 1927, the young company introduced the first welded spiral pipe, having developed a process to weld the lockseam spiral automatically during production. The results of this innovation completely revolutionized the pipe making field. There was now a lightweight pipe that could be used as a pressure vehicle. As a result, Naylors Lockseam Spiralweld Pipe was used extensively during the 1930s and 1940s throughout the then rapidly expanding oil fields for gas gathering lines and for surface casing. It helped the Allies during World War II, by supplying fuel oil and gasoline to our advancing troops in North Africa, Europe, and the Pacific. Those early years also saw the company continue to add services and products to the line, manufacturing pipe in increasingly heavier gauges, and providing new products such as, the exclusive, patented Wedgelock Coupling. By the mid 1940s, Naylor established a complete fitting and pipe fabricating department to serve other customer requirements. As the product line continued to expand, so too did the opportunities. During the 1950s and 1960s, Naylor Pipe found widespread use in such new markets as construction and mining, by proving to be an ideal answer to such applications as air and water supply, product lines and hydraulicking. Although years of success continued to prove the tremendous value and popularity of Naylors Spiralweld Pipe, it was not without its limitations. So, by 1970, Naylor introduced Spiral Buttweld Pipe. This versatile pipe was able to be produced in much heavier gauges and larger sizes to meet the piping needs of the 1980s and 1990s. In fact, today it is available in wall thicknesses as heavy as 1/2" and in diameters as large as 10 feet. While other pipe manufacturers have come and gone, Naylor continues to grow and prosper, concentrating on what it does best…the manufacture of spiralweld pipe. Much credit goes to the three presidents who guided the Company through such troubled times as the Great depression, three wars, and numerous recessions: Carl Naylor from 1925 to 1950 Newt Turney from 1950 to 1971 and Bill Skeates from 1971 to the present. But even more important, are all the men and women who have served the company down through the years. To them and to our many customers we pay tribute, fully aware of our past accomplishments and ready to achieve even more in the future.

In Seattle, Washington, a college student named Al Moen was working in a garage to earn his tuition money. While cleaning up after work one night, he turned on the old-fashioned two-handle faucet to wash his hands, and a sudden burst of hot water made him jump back in alarm. That set an idea in motion in Al Moens mind that literally changed the world of plumbing and the way much of the world today gets its water -- it gave him the idea for the single-handle faucet. He once said, "it got me thinking that you ought to be able to get what you wanted out of a faucet. The more I thought about it, the more I was convinced that a single-handle mixing faucet was the answer, so I began to make some drawings." It took Al countless tries to sell his concept to plumbing products manufacturers. Al worked on many revisions. World War II put a hold on the project, as materials were needed for the war effort. But by 1947, Al had an interested manufacturer -- Ravenna Metal Products of Seattle -- and they sold their first 250 faucets to a San Francisco plumbing supplier. The Moen® single-handle faucet was on its way to becoming a household name, not only in North America, but in approximately 55 countries around the world today. By 1959, the Moen single-handle faucet was in hundreds of thousands of homes in the U.S., buoyed by the post-war building boom. And in that year, a survey of the worlds leading designers, published in FORTUNE magazine, named the Moen single-handle faucet as one of the top 100 best designed mass-produced products of modern times. Another FORTUNE article published in 1991 listed Moen faucets as a part of "100 of Americas Best." Al Moen headed Moen Incorporateds research and development group until his retirement in 1982. He held over 75 patents, including the replaceable cartridge (eliminating washers in faucets), the screen aerator, push-button shower valve diverter, swivel spray, pressure balancing shower valve and flow control aerator. Many of his patents were in fields totally unrelated to plumbing. A nominee for the National Inventors Hall of Fame, Al Moen has been honored by the plumbing industry, being named to the Kitchen & Bath Hall of Fame in 1993. His genius is perhaps best summed up by the simple title that appeared on his business card -- Al Moen, Inventor.
