The beginnings of the company date back to 1876, when the grandfather of Werner Battenfeld established a smithy and wrought metal workshop. 1948: Werner Battenfeld becomes the sole proprietor of the family-owned company and establishes Battenfeld Injection Molding Technology. 1954: A new production plant is opened in Scherl/Meinerzhagen. Battenfeld Injection Molding Technology begins its worldwide expansion. 1959: Subsidiaries are established in the U.S. and in the UK with rapid international growth in the following years. 1962: Werner Battenfeld acquires the HMW plant in Kottingbrunn, Austria and establishes a second production company to manufacture injection molding machines. 1977: Battenfeld is taken over by Schloemann Siemag AG (SMS). 1983: Battenfeld introduces compact machinery in all clamping force sizes, including modular automation equipment. 1991: The world’s largest injection molding machine with 8000 t clamping force, developed and manufactured by Battenfeld, goes into production. 2005: Production is concentrated at the Kottingbrunn facility. We have inherited many revolutionary inventions and are aware of the responsibilities that come with such an inheritance. Steel has a long tradition in the towns in which BÖHLER is based. But the real success story began in 1870. Albert and Emil Böhler purchased steel from a number of different manufacturers and sold it through their company in Vienna. Due to their great sales success, they were able to buy the mill in Waidhofen, Lower Austria in 1872, followed by the mill in Kapfenberg, Styria in 1894, they then modernised and expanded production significantly. The outstanding quality of the steel even then was a major in their early success. At the same time a world-wide sales network was established which was unique for the period. Even then, globalisation was a familiar word at Böhler and proximity to the customer was a top priority.
