Recently, Modern Mill, a company focused on sustainable building products, has expanded its product line by launching the new ACRE product.

ACRE is made from rice husks recycled at a zero-waste production facility in Mississippi, requiring no tree felling while offering a warm texture and ease of processing similar to wood. ACRE stands for Advanced Composite with Regenerated Elements, emitting zero volatile organic compounds (VOCs), phenols, formaldehyde, and other permanent chemicals—contrasting sharply with plywood or other composite woods that may contain VOCs or formaldehyde.
This material features waterproof, weather-resistant, and pest-resistant properties, with versatile applications including wall panels, trim boards, decking, porch boards, and any other project requiring paneling. Additionally, ACRE is recyclable, allowing it to be recovered and reused after use. This innovative product plays a significant role in preventing deforestation. Although many believe wood is more environmentally friendly than concrete or steel, the World Resources Institute notes that timber harvesting is not carbon neutral. Modern Mill's Chief Marketing Officer, Kim Guimond, stated in an interview with Builder magazine: "When sustainable alternatives like those from Modern Mill can deliver the look and performance of wood... why cut down trees to make wall panels, trim, and decking?"
Globally, the construction industry contributes massively to heat-trapping pollution that drives climate change. The United Nations Environment Programme reports that in 2023, the sector accounted for approximately 37% of global annual pollution. According to the World Economic Forum, the construction industry is a key sector for addressing the worst impacts of temperature rises caused by human activity, with decarbonization efforts in this sector offering a $1.8 trillion global market opportunity.
In line with Modern Mill's commitment to reducing pollution in built environments, ACRE has been named the Green Builder 2025 Sustainable Product of the Year, marking the second time the company has received this honor.
Guimond stated in a press release: "Modern Mill is dedicated to creating sustainable building materials that not only meet customers' aesthetic and functional needs but also make a positive contribution to the environment."
