According to TASS on June 26, scientists at Tver State Technical University (TSTU) have developed a unique technology that utilizes purified petroleum feedstock and concentrated biomass to produce biofuels for the chemical and fuel industries. Sofia Yemelyanova, a graduate student at Tver State Technical University, reported this achievement to TASS.

A representative from the institution stated: "This is a technology for refining petroleum feedstock and enriching biomass components, aimed at using them jointly as biofuels or fuel additives. Currently, there is an urgent need to find alternative methods for obtaining petroleum fractions and waste treatment. The combined conversion of petroleum feedstock and biomass components is a promising approach to solving both problems."
Yemelyanova explained that this method can reduce petroleum production, allowing oil fields to recover and utilize certain types of industrial waste, transforming them into secondary raw materials for the production of chemicals and hydrocarbon fuels. She also noted that in our country, this field is still in its infancy, with research work being conducted in scientific laboratories. The uniqueness of this research lies in the combined use of petroleum and biomass, whereas other peers extract biofuels only from organic raw materials.
Experts point out that the target consumer base for this product includes the chemical and fuel industries, as well as fine organic synthesis enterprises. Currently, this technology has been tested on various petroleum and biomass model compounds. Through this method, models as close as possible to the composition of real raw materials can be created, and the reactivity of various compounds can be studied under conditions close to real ones, thereby investigating the reaction kinetics and mechanisms occurring in the biofuel production process.
Yemelyanova also stated that scientists have currently determined the optimal conditions for this reaction and synthesized an efficient catalyst. She added: "Further research will use real raw materials, followed by analysis of the resulting products and comparison with conventional fuels to assess their potential."
