A team of engineers from the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) has successfully developed a unique robot named ATOM (Aerial and Terrestrial Mode Operating monocopter). The research results have been published in the International Journal of Robotics Research.

Approximately the size of a basketball, the robot is primarily constructed from a wireframe and resembles a small military drum. Inside, it features blade-like wings similar to maple seeds on a helicopter, which generate lift when the robot rotates. To prevent tipping and getting stuck, the team added crossed wires on both sides. The robot is equipped with two actuators, two small rotors, two small circuit boards, and a miniature battery, weighing just 124g in total.

The team's goal was to create a small, lightweight robot capable of both ground locomotion and spinning aerial flight. To achieve this, they designed a unique frame that supports both modes of movement simultaneously.

ATOM achieves remarkable performance: it delivers both aerial and ground capabilities with extremely low energy consumption and accomplishes all functions using only two actuators, unlike most multi-modal robots that are energy-efficient in only one mode.

In practical use, ATOM can roll straight forward on various surfaces using its frame as wheels, turn with the help of its two rotors, and self-right itself. When switching to flight mode, the robot tilts at an angle to spin the frame and take off. Once airborne, it becomes a highly controllable horizontally spinning wheel.
