Harbin Electric Corporation recently announced that the world's first 50 Mvar/35 kV air-water cooled high-voltage direct-connected synchronous condenser, independently developed with dual capabilities of steady-state regulation and dynamic support, has successfully completed all type tests. This product directly connects to the 35 kV power grid without the need for an intermediate step-up transformer, simultaneously improving operational efficiency and economy.
This type of synchronous condenser raises the voltage level from 27 kV to 35 kV and achieves breakthroughs in key technologies such as high-voltage insulation and corona prevention. The team innovatively adopted air-water cooling technology to resolve the conflict between insulation thickness and heat dissipation performance, and developed multi-turn water-cooled bar-type stator windings. Combined with a half-speed, large-diameter, high-inertia rotor structure, it significantly enhances the unit's moment of inertia, enabling direct connection to the 35 kV distribution network. This technical route simplifies the grid connection architecture, reduces on-site construction difficulty, and provides a new pathway for the large-scale application of high-voltage direct-connected reactive power compensation equipment.
Type test data shows that this synchronous condenser can increase the equivalent short-circuit capacity at the station connection point to more than twice the original level, with a 50% improvement in the short-circuit ratio. Its transient reactive power response speed is superior to existing 10.5 kV synchronous condensers, effectively avoiding issues such as bus voltage deviation. Additionally, its inertia time constant is increased by 70%, greatly enhancing inertia support capability. During grid frequency disturbances, it can suppress the rate of decline, improving system stability. The unit also features optimized air ducts and electromagnetic noise reduction structures, lowering operational noise.
This product has formed a standardized and replicable high-voltage direct-connected reactive power voltage regulation solution, providing key equipment support for the large-scale integration of new energy into the power grid, and holds significant value for engineering promotion.
