On August 4, the "Blue Ocean Pioneer," the largest self-propelled pure electric deep-sea cable-laying vessel independently designed and developed by the 708th Research Institute of China State Shipbuilding Corporation, was launched in Jiangsu. Once completed, this major national asset in the offshore wind power sector will undertake key missions such as laying high-voltage submarine cables for China's deep and far-sea wind farms and installing transoceanic submarine power cables.

The 16,000-ton cable-laying vessel measures 139.8 meters in length and 38 meters in width, features DP-2 dynamic positioning capability, and is suitable for navigation in unlimited waters. With a maximum cable capacity of 16,000 tons, it is currently the self-propelled cable-laying vessel with the largest cable capacity, the strongest wind and wave resistance, and the most advanced deep-sea operation capabilities in China.

According to Xiahou Mingsheng, a researcher at the 708th Research Institute of China State Shipbuilding Corporation and chief designer of the "Blue Ocean Pioneer," the development of the 16,000-ton cable-laying vessel is a highly challenging systematic project, with technical difficulties concentrated in three aspects:
  • First, the hull structure design challenges posed by the large cable capacity;

  • Second, operational stability under complex deep-sea conditions;

  • Third, the intelligent design of the dual-channel cable-laying operation system.

It is reported that the vessel's maximum operational water depth can reach 3,000 meters. Compared with the most advanced international vessels of the same type, it demonstrates strong competitiveness in terms of both maximum cable capacity per voyage and fuel consumption and operational economy during cable-laying operations, with an overall technical level that is internationally advanced.
