Recently, the intelligent calculation total station for overhead line construction independently developed by State Grid Ningxia Economic and Technological Research Institute was officially put into use. This equipment is designed for transmission line engineering construction surveying scenarios, integrating commonly used calculation programs such as re-surveying and pit marking, sag observation, tower inclination, and crossing object distance measurement directly into the total station, enabling automatic collection and real-time calculation of on-site measurement data.

Traditional transmission line construction surveying typically requires the use of a theodolite or total station to obtain basic data such as distance and angle, after which construction personnel perform manual calculations and verification according to corresponding formulas. The new equipment can directly obtain real-time parameters such as laser ranging, angle, and temperature, and complete calculations through built-in programs, integrating measurement and data processing into a single device.
In practical application, a complex measurement and calculation task that previously took about 30 minutes to complete can be shortened to about 2 minutes using the intelligent calculation total station. The equipment also reduces the steps of manually entering measurement values and calculation formulas, and is used for construction tasks such as re-surveying and pit marking, overhead conductor sag control, tower verticality inspection, and line crossing distance measurement.
The re-surveying and pit marking step is mainly used to determine the foundation positions and construction control points of transmission line towers; sag observation corresponds to the line shape and height control after conductor stringing; tower inclination measurement is used to inspect the tower body construction status; and crossing object distance measurement covers the spatial distance between transmission lines and roads, buildings, and other facilities. This equipment centrally deploys the above multiple types of construction calculation programs on the total station terminal.
The first batch of products of this intelligent total station has now been delivered and put into use at construction sites. Construction units have begun using the equipment to carry out transmission line surveying operations, and the equipment has moved from the research and development stage to the on-site engineering application stage.
The entity responsible for this technological development is State Grid Ningxia Economic and Technological Research Institute. The institute mainly undertakes Ningxia power grid planning, engineering design review, techno-economic analysis, and technical research related to power transmission and transformation projects. This total station development targets the measurement and calculation steps in the construction stage of overhead transmission lines.
