Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 9, H&MV Engineering has finalized the electrical and civil works for the 200MW / 400MWh Blackhillock battery storage project in Scotland, developed by Zenobē. Recognized as Europe’s largest battery energy storage system (BESS), the facility marks a significant advancement in energy storage. H&MV Engineering served as the principal designer and contractor, overseeing the full electrical connection process. This included designing, procuring, supplying, installing, and commissioning the 275kV and 33kV electrical networks.

The company connected the BESS to SSE’s 275kV transmission system, integrating protection schemes, interlocking, controls, and metering systems. H&MV also managed all site and project responsibilities. Located between Inverness and Aberdeen, Blackhillock helps alleviate grid congestion from three major offshore wind farms. It is the world’s first battery system to offer stability services to the National Energy System Operator (NESO), expected to save consumers over £170 million and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 2.6 million tonnes over 15 years.

The initial phase, delivering 200MW / 400MWh, is now operational, with a second phase of 100MW / 200MWh planned for 2026. Once complete, the total 300MW / 600MWh capacity will supply power equivalent to over 3.1 million homes for one hour. This project boosts Scotland’s operational battery storage capacity by more than 30%. The site employs Wärtsilä’s Quantum energy storage system and GEMS Digital Energy Platform, paired with SMA grid-forming inverters, enabling critical stability services like short-circuit level and synthetic inertia. These features support grid reliability as the UK transitions away from fossil fuel plants.

Tim Hewitt, Zenobē’s project engineering manager, praised the collaboration: “We are pleased to have worked alongside H&MV Engineering in delivering the Blackhillock, Europe’s largest battery energy storage system. Their expertise and commitment as principal designer and contractor contributed to the success of this landmark project, driving progress toward a net-zero power grid by 2025.” The Blackhillock facility underscores a key step in sustainable energy infrastructure, enhancing grid stability and supporting renewable energy integration.

With its strategic placement and advanced technology, Blackhillock strengthens Scotland’s role in the shift to cleaner energy. The operational first phase and planned expansion by 2026 highlight its capacity to meet growing demands while cutting emissions and costs for consumers. H&MV Engineering’s comprehensive involvement ensures the project’s success, paving the way for future large-scale storage solutions.
