Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 20, The National Farmers’ Union (NFU) has introduced a comprehensive ten-year plan for the British beef sector, launched ahead of Great British Beef Week. The strategy outlines priorities to ensure profitability and sustainability, emphasizing high-quality, high-welfare, and environmentally responsible production. The NFU advocates for collaboration among government, supply chains, and levy boards to drive meaningful change.

Among the core pillars of the vision is the creation of a fair and functioning supply chain

A key focus is establishing a fair and transparent supply chain. The NFU stresses that fostering trust among producers, processors, and retailers is vital to boost confidence and encourage long-term investment. The plan also calls for accelerated sustainability efforts, urging supply chain partners to support farmers in adopting innovative environmental practices effectively.

The vision addresses trade policies, highlighting the need to expand access to export markets while maintaining robust biosecurity at UK borders. The NFU emphasizes that trade agreements must uphold British standards to protect the sector’s integrity. Additionally, the plan seeks clear policy frameworks that balance food production, sustainability, and trade, noting that uncertainty in current agricultural and environmental programs has created challenges for farmers.

The NFU proposes building a robust evidence base to showcase the sector’s commitment to animal health and welfare, including responsible use of veterinary medicines, antibiotics, and strong disease prevention and traceability measures. David Barton, NFU Livestock Board Chair, stated: “Confidence is at an all-time low due to acute challenges facing the wider industry, such as uncertainty about the future of environmental schemes, the acceleration of direct payments and changes to inheritance tax.” He added: “The 10-year vision was developed in recognition of these challenges, and with the right support from government and the supply chain, the plan could help build a resilient beef industry.”

The strategy aims to position the beef sector for growth by addressing economic and environmental challenges through collective action. By aligning stakeholders and promoting innovation, the NFU seeks to strengthen the sector’s reputation and ensure its long-term viability, delivering benefits for producers and consumers while advancing sustainable farming practices.
