en.Wedoany.com Reported - Lightsource bp is advancing the Straboe solar-plus-storage project in southern Ireland, located in the Tullow area of County Carlow. The project plans to build a 102MW solar power station, paired with a 60MW battery energy storage system. The project covers approximately 320 acres and is designed to meet the clean electricity and flexible regulation needs of the Irish grid. Once completed, the Straboe solar-plus-storage project is expected to generate enough electricity annually to meet the demand of approximately 26,400 households.
The battery energy storage system supporting the Straboe solar-plus-storage project can play a role in managing fluctuations in solar output, grid load variations, and local power supply regulation. Lightsource bp's project portfolio in Ireland includes 386MW of solar capacity and 451MW of battery storage capacity, with the Straboe project being a key component of this portfolio.
The Straboe solar-plus-storage project also includes biodiversity enhancement measures and is expected to provide approximately €1.2 million in development funding to Carlow County Council to support local community development and public services. The project has received approval from An Bord Pleanála, Ireland's planning regulatory authority, and Lightsource bp will collaborate with local landowners and contractors to advance construction.
As the project moves into the next phase, core efforts will focus on engineering construction, equipment procurement, energy storage system integration, and grid connection commissioning. The pace of implementation will depend on construction schedules and grid access conditions. Lightsource bp plans to conduct ongoing ecological monitoring during the project's operational phase to ensure the coexistence of solar facilities with agricultural activities.
