Wedoany.com Report-May 18,The Victorian State Government in Australia has reported significant progress on the Gippsland Line Upgrade, nearing completion to improve train services for Gippsland communities. Construction activities are scheduled later this year to finalize the project, enhancing regional connectivity.

The upgrade is a collaborative effort between the Victorian and Australian governments.

The upgrade introduces a modern train control system and infrastructure enhancements, designed to ensure safer and more frequent train operations. These improvements aim to provide reliable transport options for residents along the Gippsland Line. The 2025-26 Victorian Budget has allocated funding to support train services every 40 minutes on the Traralgon Line once the project is complete.

From June 14 to August 13, 2025, coaches will temporarily replace trains on parts or all of the Traralgon and Bairnsdale lines due to the upgrade and other metropolitan network projects. During this period, crews will install a new signalling system, laying cables and setting up trackside equipment between Drouin and Traralgon. Safety testing of the 70km rail line’s new infrastructure, driver training, and commissioning work for new platforms at Morwell and Traralgon stations will also occur.

The Gippsland Line Upgrade is a joint initiative between the Victorian and Australian governments. Previous collaborations have delivered station improvements, track duplication for dependable services, a new bridge over the Avon River in Stratford, and extended modern VLocity train services to Bairnsdale. A Department of Transport and Planning spokesperson stated: “These upgrades reflect our commitment to improving transport infrastructure for regional communities.”

The Department of Transport and Planning is developing a new timetable for the Gippsland Line, with service details to be shared soon. In a related development, the Victorian Government began construction on the Suburban Rail Loop in March 2025, starting at a tunnel boring machine launch site in Clarinda, further advancing the state’s transport network.
