The plant will incorporate Coahuila into Waelzholz's global manufacturing network and supply industrial customers in North America. The facility is located in the Chuy María Amistad Industrial Park, covering approximately 60,000 square meters. Waelzholz expects the production line to start up in mid-2028, with an initial annual capacity of up to 50,000 tons, producing cold-rolled steel materials customized to customer specifications.
The new plant will integrate rolling, heat treatment, and cutting processes, and will adopt an expansion plan capable of gradually increasing annual capacity to 100,000 tons. Its products will focus on demanding industrial applications, including the automotive industry, electric mobility, energy engineering, and industrial manufacturing. Waelzholz stated that Ramos Arizpe was chosen due to the concentration of automotive manufacturers and industrial suppliers in northern Mexico and the southern United States. The company also emphasized the advantage of proximity to raw material sources and has already begun developing and qualifying regional suppliers of hot-rolled strip steel to increase the share of North American raw materials in the production chain.
This Mexican plant will complement Waelzholz's service center in Cleveland, USA, shortening supply distances to North American customers. According to the company, some specialty materials currently supplied to suppliers in Mexico's automotive industry are transported distances ranging from 2,000 to over 10,000 kilometers, depending on technical specifications and quality requirements. Waelzholz entered the North American market in the early 2000s and has maintained a distribution company and warehouse in Mexico since 2019. Once the new plant in Coahuila becomes operational, the company will add local production capacity to its international network already covering Europe, Brazil, and China, with the goal of establishing a regional source of specialty steel supply for the North American market.
The groundbreaking ceremony was co-hosted by company representatives and Coahuila state officials. Coahuila Governor Manolo Jiménez confirmed the investment amount of 1.2 billion pesos at the ceremony and stated that labor stability and investment conditions were key factors in attracting the project to the state. For Ramos Arizpe, the new plant will add specialized capacity to one of Mexico's most important automotive manufacturing corridors.
