en.Wedoany.com Reported - On August 19, U.S. utility company WE Energies signed a 20-year power purchase agreement with NextEra Energy Resources, planning to continue purchasing 86% of the electricity generated by the Point Beach Nuclear Plant. The agreement is still subject to approval by the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin and has not yet taken effect.

The price, purchased electricity volume, and specific effective date of the new agreement have not been disclosed. WE Energies' current contract expires no later than 2033, and the company stated that fuel costs under the new contract will be lower than those under the existing arrangement. The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin will focus on reviewing the actual savings and their impact on customer electricity rates.

Under the current contract, WE Energies purchases approximately 1,033 megawatts of electricity from the Point Beach Nuclear Plant each year, with electricity rates increasing by more than 7% annually. In 2019, the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin required the company to study alternatives to the existing power purchase agreement together with consumer organizations.

The Point Beach Nuclear Plant, operated by NextEra Energy Resources, has two units with a total generating capacity of 1,182 megawatts and is the only operating nuclear plant in Wisconsin. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has extended the operating licenses for Units 1 and 2 to 2050 and 2053, respectively, providing a regulatory basis for the new power purchase agreement to cover through the 2050s.

In addition to WE Energies, public power agency WPPI Energy has signed another long-term agreement to continue purchasing 168 megawatts of electricity from the plant through the 2050s. Wisconsin regulators project that the state's peak electricity demand will grow by approximately 40% over the next five years, with the new demand driven primarily by multiple large data center projects.
