Wedoany.com Report-Jun 24, Brightspeed, a leading fiber broadband provider in the United States, has partnered with Calix to successfully test 50G-PON technology at the Brightspeed Technology Advancement Center (BTAC). The trial, conducted in 2025, demonstrated the ability to deliver high-speed, low-latency connectivity alongside existing XGS-PON and GPON technologies on a single fiber network, paving the way for advanced digital services.

The test positions Brightspeed to support future broadband demands, enabling applications such as immersive gaming, augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR), and large-scale enterprise connectivity. The 50G-PON technology offers dual-rate capabilities, supporting both asymmetric 50G/25G and symmetric 50G/50G configurations within Brightspeed’s current optical distribution network (ODN).

Brian Bond, Chief Network Officer at Brightspeed, stated: “This is exactly the type of cutting-edge innovation we envisioned would come from the Brightspeed Technology Advancement Center (BTAC) when we launched it in 2023. By planning today for 50G-PON, we're building a foundation for tomorrow's connectivity, whether that means 8K streaming, next-gen telehealth, or the future of remote work and entertainment.”

The trial utilized the Calix Broadband Platform, including Calix Cloud, to integrate 50G-PON into Brightspeed’s existing network infrastructure. This approach allowed seamless delivery of multiple technologies over a unified platform, confirming Brightspeed’s ability to support diverse services like private networks, fixed wireless, and mobile backhaul. The test underscores the potential for operational efficiency without requiring significant infrastructure upgrades.

Shane Eleniak, Chief Product Officer at Calix, commented: “As competitive pressure intensifies, providers like Brightspeed need a strong foundation to quickly bring elevated experiences to market. Investing in the Calix Broadband Platform allows Brightspeed to integrate 50G-PON-enabled services and boost operational efficiency using their existing hardware, software, and fiber investments, without massive tech overhauls. This helps them scale now and into the future with transformative services and converged business and residential networks, driving impressive growth. The result is an increased ability to simplify their business, innovate for their subscribers, and grow value for themselves and the communities they serve.”

While XGS-PON remains sufficient for most residential and small business needs, the growing demand for high-bandwidth applications like streaming, teleconferencing, and digital collaboration highlights the need for advanced solutions. With 50G-PON, Brightspeed is well-equipped to lead the next phase of fiber broadband innovation, ensuring robust connectivity for future digital advancements.
