Novo Nordisk Partners with Anthropic to Use Claude in Drug R&D
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 16, Novo Nordisk and AI company Anthropic announced a partnership under which Novo Nordisk will adopt Anthropic's Claude models and Claude Science for drug discovery and development as well as R&D software engineering. In the initial phase of the collaboration, Claude Science will be tested against specific R&D problems identified by Novo Nordisk scientists and computational teams, and the two parties will jointly develop solutions for specific scientific research tasks and biological reasoning workflows.
Under the collaboration arrangement, Claude will first enter Novo Nordisk's R&D workflows, with application priorities including analysis of complex scientific problems, biological reasoning, and research related to drug mechanisms of action. Novo Nordisk will also use Anthropic's frontier models to strengthen its AI-driven software development capabilities and build and scale internal AI applications for its R&D teams. The collaboration plan also includes data governance and human oversight mechanisms to meet Novo Nordisk's existing ethical and compliance requirements.
This collaboration is a further expansion based on the two parties' existing applications. Novo Nordisk previously used Claude to build its generative AI documentation platform NovoScribe, which runs on Amazon Bedrock and combines MongoDB Atlas, retrieval-augmented generation, and standard texts approved by domain experts to generate clinical study reports, device validation documents, and patient materials. Anthropic disclosed that after Novo Nordisk adopted Claude, the generation time for some clinical study reports was shortened from more than 10 weeks to about 10 minutes, the resources required for device validation documents were reduced by about 95%, and the number of document review rounds was reduced by about 50%.
Novo Nordisk's previous Claude applications were mainly focused on automating documentation and regulatory materials at the back end of clinical development, while this new collaboration extends the scope of application toward drug discovery and the front end of R&D. Claude Science currently integrates scientific research tools such as literature analysis, genomics, single-cell analysis, proteomics, structural biology, and cheminformatics, can invoke more than 60 skills and connectors for scientific research, and retains auditable records of analysis processes and computational results.
Since 2025, Anthropic has continued to expand Claude's capabilities in the life sciences, with applications now covering early discovery, scientific computing, clinical trial management, and regulatory operations. Claude Science, launched in 2026, further integrates scientific research databases, computing environments, and multi-step research tasks into a single working environment. Novo Nordisk will first conduct tests starting from specific R&D workflows, and the subsequent scope of application will continue to be determined based on the two parties' validation results for scientific problems and R&D processes.
