AstraZeneca Invests Nearly 200 Million Yuan to Upgrade Its Wuxi, Jiangsu Production Base in China
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 17, AstraZeneca announced an investment of nearly 200 million yuan to comprehensively upgrade the New Drug Development and Supply Building at its production and supply base in Wuxi, Jiangsu, for process development, production, and post-commercialization global supply of an investigational cardiovascular innovative drug. The project has a floor area of approximately 5,800 square meters and is scheduled to commence operations in the fourth quarter of 2029, with an expected annual drug production capacity of 400 million tablets.
The existing New Drug Development and Supply Building at the Wuxi base is located in the Huangshan Road plant area. According to the project's environmental impact assessment public disclosure, the renovation investment is 198.8 million yuan, utilizing the existing plant for the upgrade. The original plant covers a site area of approximately 1,986 square meters with a floor area of approximately 5,800 square meters, and will generate additional drug production capacity through equipment upgrades and production facility renovations.
This upgrade primarily serves AstraZeneca's investigational cardiovascular innovative drug. Upon completion of the project, the Wuxi base will participate in commercial manufacturing process development from the drug R&D stage and will undertake large-scale production and global supply following the drug's approval and market launch. AstraZeneca stated that the base is expected to become its first production base in the Asia-Pacific region capable of supporting global launch and supply of new drugs.
AstraZeneca's Wuxi supply base has been in operation since 2001 and has been integrated into its global supply network, undertaking the production of formulation products, lyophilized powder for injection, and regional packaging, supplying products to more than 70 markets worldwide. The base also houses a China logistics center, forming an integrated system of production, packaging, warehousing, and international supply.
This nearly 200 million yuan investment is part of AstraZeneca's previously announced long-term investment plan in China. In January of this year, the company announced plans to invest more than 100 billion yuan in China by 2030, focusing on expanding its R&D and production footprint, and explicitly proposed upgrading its existing production bases in Wuxi, Taizhou, Qingdao, and Beijing.
The Wuxi base has continued to expand its new drug production capacity in recent years. AstraZeneca has previously advanced a small-molecule drug production project related to cardiovascular innovative drugs at the site and continues to refine its production system from new drug process development to commercial manufacturing. Upon completion of the renovation of the New Drug Development and Supply Building, the base will add an annual production capacity of 400 million tablets, with operations scheduled to commence in the fourth quarter of 2029.
