en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 13, Georgia-Pacific's containerboard mill in Monticello, Mississippi, completed a modernization of its log handling system with a total investment of approximately $110 million, and the new facilities have been put into operation. The upgrade project installed two radial cranes, each with a lifting capacity of 35 tons, capable of unloading a full truckload of logs in a single lift, reducing the unloading time for log transport vehicles by approximately 50%.

The project's scope of upgrade covers processes including log weigh-in upon arrival, unloading, debarking, and chipping, with supporting installation of new weigh scales, radial cranes, log debarkers, wood chippers, and auxiliary handling equipment. The upgraded log handling line is responsible for supplying wood chips to the mill's pulping system.

Georgia-Pacific simultaneously adjusted the in-plant entry and exit routes for log transport vehicles. Transport vehicles now enter the log receiving area via GP Road and Cytex Road on the northeast side of the mill, and the previously used NA Sandifer Highway main entrance no longer serves as the primary entry point for this fleet of log transport vehicles.

Georgia-Pacific launched the investment plan for this project in April 2023, with an initially announced budget of $91 million, covering the procurement of log weighing, loading and unloading, de-bundling, and wood chip processing equipment.
