Wedoany.com Report-Sept. 28, ANDRITZ, a global technology provider, has secured a contract from Compagnia Valdostana delle Acque (CVA) to rehabilitate the Valpelline hydropower plant in Italy’s Aosta Valley. Located in the Aosta Valley and operational since 1958, the Valpelline plant is powered by the Place Moulin reservoir, one of Europe’s largest. With an installed capacity of approximately 130 MW and a net head exceeding 900 meters, it ranks among Europe’s highest-drop hydropower facilities. The plant, equipped with two generating units, is vital to Italy’s renewable energy strategy and supports cross-border electricity interconnections.

The rehabilitation project encompasses the supply of two 87 MVA synchronous generators, four Pelton runners, spherical valves, penstock components, and a comprehensive upgrade of the cooling and electrical systems. The new generators will comply with updated European grid code regulations. The contract also covers civil works, dismantling, reassembly, commissioning, and site management to ensure a seamless upgrade process.

Upon completion, the project is expected to boost Valpelline’s capacity by 15%, enhancing its role in delivering sustainable energy to Italy for decades. The upgraded facility will continue to support the region’s energy needs while contributing to environmental sustainability through reliable, renewable power generation.

ANDRITZ’s expertise in hydropower modernization is further demonstrated by its recent contract with Dravske elektrarne Maribor d.o.o. (DEM), Slovenia’s largest renewable energy producer, for the full refurbishment of the Formin hydropower plant. The Valpelline project reinforces ANDRITZ’s commitment to advancing clean energy infrastructure and supporting regional economic growth through job creation and technological innovation in the Aosta Valley.
