Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 2, Kallpa Generación has commenced commercial operations at its 204 MW Sunny solar plant, located in La Joya district, Arequipa, Peru, following authorization from the Economic Operation Committee of the National Interconnected System (COES). The $250 million project will supply electricity to Peru’s national grid during its initial phase.

The plant’s integration into the National Interconnected Electricity System (SEIN) was completed in August with the energization of the 220 kV busbar at the substation and the L-2070 transmission line connecting San José and the Sunny facility. This step marked a key milestone in ensuring the stable transmission of solar-generated power to the national grid.

Kallpa Generación plans a second expansion phase approved by the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM), which will increase the facility’s total capacity to 309 MW by 2026. The expansion will involve the installation of 182,040 solar modules, 370 inverters, and 13 transformer substations to optimize system performance and improve energy output efficiency.

To support the project’s construction and financial requirements, Kallpa Generación completed a $700 million bond issuance in September on the international market. The proceeds were used to refinance its $650 million Kallpa 2027 bond ahead of schedule and to finalize funding for the Sunny plant.

The Sunny solar project highlights Peru’s ongoing efforts to expand renewable energy capacity and diversify its electricity generation mix.
