Wedoany.com Report-Dec.6, Zanskar Geothermal & Minerals has announced the discovery of the Big Blind geothermal system in western Nevada, marking the first commercially confirmed blind geothermal resource identified in the United States in more than three decades.
A blind system displays no visible surface manifestations such as hot springs or fumaroles and has no previous exploration history or well data. Zanskar located the anomaly using its proprietary prospecting toolkit and AI-driven prediction platform, then defined precise drilling targets.
In July and August 2025, the company completed two intermediate-depth wells that encountered a permeable reservoir with temperatures of 250 °F (121 °C) at approximately 2,700 feet (823 metres) depth. These parameters surpass the minimum requirements for utility-scale binary-cycle power generation and are significantly higher than typical regional background temperatures.
Although final capacity will be determined through further exploration and reservoir testing, Zanskar notes that naturally occurring geothermal systems with similar characteristics routinely support power plants exceeding 100 MW when developed with conventional technology.
Big Blind is the latest addition to Zanskar's growing portfolio of confirmed resources, following successful validation drilling at the Lightning Dock project in New Mexico and the Pumpernickel site in Nevada. The company reports an extensive inventory of additional high-grade anomalies already prioritised for deeper exploratory drilling.
These discoveries are expected to provide large electricity consumers, utilities, and public authorities with new options for dispatchable, carbon-free baseload power. Zanskar emphasises that its AI-native exploration approach delivers both lower finding costs and high repeatability, helping unlock previously overlooked geothermal resources across the western United States.
Joel Edwards, co-founder and Chief Technology Officer at Zanskar, stated: "Naturally occurring geothermal systems are commonly overlooked for being 'too difficult to find,' or 'too sparse to matter', a narrative being dispelled by Zanskar's ability to repeatedly find new geothermal hotspots such as Big Blind."
He continued: "What's often called 'conventional geothermal' is a tremendous, untapped source for reliable clean, firm power at low costs in the western U.S. We're excited that after years of behind-the-scenes work finding these new geothermal hotspots, we're now proving they can support power generation facilities with the drill bit."
By systematically identifying and confirming hidden high-temperature resources, Zanskar aims to accelerate the deployment of geothermal energy as a scalable solution for meeting rising power demand with round-the-clock renewable generation.
