Wedoany.com Report-Dec.22, Saudi Arabia's grain production in 2024 totaled 1.65 million tons, a decrease from 1.75 million tons recorded in the previous year, according to data released by the General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT).
The area planted with grain crops covered approximately 304.45 thousand hectares, while harvesting took place on nearly 303 thousand hectares.
Wheat continued to dominate the grain sector, occupying 72 percent of the total planted area and yielding 1.19 million tons. Other grains, such as sorghum, corn, millet, and minor varieties, made up the remaining output in smaller quantities.
Among regions, Al Jouf led in grain production with around 331.5 thousand tons from a cultivated area of nearly 45.7 thousand hectares. Riyadh ranked second with approximately 278.5 thousand tons, followed by Hail and Qassim as notable contributors.
The report also detailed progress in organic agriculture. Organic crop production reached an estimated 98 thousand tons in 2024, with perennial crops comprising about 71 percent of this total. The land dedicated to organic farming surpassed 24 thousand hectares, primarily allocated to perennial varieties.
While domestic output provides a portion of supply, the country relies substantially on imports for agricultural needs. Agricultural imports in 2024 amounted to 18.76 million tons, of which grains represented 72 percent. In contrast, agricultural exports totaled around 506 thousand tons, mainly consisting of fruits and other crop products.
These figures reflect ongoing developments in the agricultural sector, balancing local production with international trade to meet demand.
