Wedoany.com Report on Feb 6th, India has made significant progress in the rooftop solar sector. According to the latest data released by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, as of December 2025, the country has cumulatively installed 2,085,514 rooftop solar systems under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana scheme.

In a written reply submitted to Parliament, Shri Shripad Yesso Naik, Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy, stated: "Since its launch in February 2024, the scheme has benefited 2,614,446 households across the country, with total central financial assistance amounting to INR 147.7 billion." This data reflects the rapid adoption of rooftop solar systems across India.
In terms of regional distribution, Gujarat leads in rooftop solar installations with 515,052 systems completed, subsidies disbursed amounting to INR 38.46 billion, benefiting 741,819 households. Maharashtra ranks second with 391,887 installations, while Uttar Pradesh comes third with 326,386 installations.
The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana scheme targets residential consumers using grid-connected electricity from local distribution companies, providing upfront subsidies to support the installation of rooftop solar systems in homes. Government estimates indicate that if such systems are installed in 10 million households, they could generate up to 1 trillion units of renewable energy over their lifetime, with an estimated reduction of about 720 million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions over 25 years.
