In the late 1930s Wallace became involved in joint development programmes with the Rubber and Plastics Research Association and undertook the design, manufacture and sales of test equipment to evaluate the physical properties of rubber and other polymeric materials. In the early 1950s Wallace began looking for export markets for its test equipment particularly in the rubber growing regions and in industrialised countries where rubber processing takes place. Since then, export business grew rapidly and now accounts for nearly 80% of our product output (65-70% of turnover) which is sold to over 60 countries worldwide. A large part of our export business is conducted through distributors and agents. In order to ensure that the Wallace brand is kept at the core of their business activities, regular contact is maintained by phone, fax, letter and email. In 1999 Wallace held their first Dealer Conference, which attracted over 20 distributors and agents from all over the world. The conference provided delegates with an increased knowledge of Wallace products from the sales, marketing and service aspects. The event was a great success. Our Team Customer after sales support is critical. Wallace have a service team in the UK and most Wallace distributors and agents carry out service back-up themselves with support from technical staff in Kingston. We also provide new product and service training both at Kingston and at the distributors and agents premises. Our Sales team is headed by David Reynolds who, along with other staff, frequently travel overseas, visiting agents, distributors and their customers. We exhibit at most of the major international exhibitions worldwide. We also regularly advertise in international magazines, which specialise in the rubber industry. Accurate Testing - Measured Solutions Over the last few years, we have prepared and presented several technical papers associated with hardness and plasticity at international conferences as well as having some of these published in international magazines. Through close contact with customers, research associations and our membership of international standards committees (eg BS and ASTM), we are active in devising new world standards for particular types of rubber testing. This provides Wallace with a very competitive edge when introducing new test equipment.
