In 1925, after 20 years of growth and prosperity, Clayton Dunham wrote to Purdue University, telling them that he wanted to hire their top engineering student. That student was David Nelson Crosthwait, Jr., a person who had earned both his B.S and Masters of Engineering from Purdue. A few months later Mr. Dunham drove himself to the train depot in Marshalltown, Iowa in order to welcome the new engineer personally. And so began David Crosthwait’s long and distinguished career as one of the foremost inventors and authorities on heat transfer, ventilation, and air conditioning. Crosthwait, while in the position of Director of Research Laboratories for the C.A Dunham Co. - Marshall Engineered Products Company of Michigan - invented an improved boiler, a new thermostat control, and a new differential vacuum pump, all more effective for the heating systems in larger buildings. He became well known for innovative solutions to heating and ventilation problems and, as such, Crosthwait was commissioned to design the heating system for Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Over the course of his career, Mr. Crosthwait received 39 U.S and 80 foreign patents. He also authored a manual on heating and cooling with water guides, standards, and codes that dealt with heating, ventilation, refrigeration, and air conditioning systems. After retiring in 1971, Mr. Crosthwait taught a course on steam heating theory at Purdue University until his death in 1976. Born in 1898, Mr. Crosthwait, for a lifetime of achievements, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Purdue in 1975. He was also named a Fellow of the AAAS and served as a member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers, and of the National Society of Professional Engineers. Mr. Crosthwait is also listed as one of the Top 25 Black Scientists in America. While times have changed and CAD drawings have long since replaced hand-drawn ink on velum documentation, when you call a Marshall Engineered Products Company Independent Sales Office you will speak to a representative who has been trained in the science of steam. The world was changing. Steam - which had dominated central heating, partly due to its inherent ability to travel through a system by its own kinetic energy - was giving way to a whole new world of Hydronic Technologies. The steam produced by boilers could also be used to supply domestic hot water, and hot water boilers were being introduced to share common distribution systems with the new chilled water Air Conditioning Systems being introduced. With an ear toward these changes, the company embraced the new field and put their engineering staff to work on the task of pump and hydronic specialty design. Soon the brass foundry that had supported the company with trap and valve castings had a new product to pour - pump impellers, machined to gleaming perfection and unmatched craftsmanship to design specifications still exclusive to Marshall Engineered Products Company. The TSE Brakes of today is a much larger operation than in those first few years. With over 350 employees, a chain of warehouses across North America, and its own private fleet of company over-the-road trucks, TSE has blossomed into a contender in the worldwide spring brake marketplace. Established in 1846, the young register company truly made its mark as the dominant manufacturer of cast iron registers in the latter half of the 19th century. The company continued to perfect its ornamental grille manufacturing processes and was eventually acquired by Hart & Cooley, Inc. in 1933. World War II influenced the production of several new products from Tuttle & Bailey, including air intake covers for tanks and mortar shells. The mortar die and special presses were brought out one more time during the Korean War. The Tuttle & Bailey business was moved to Holland, MI in 1983-84. In October 1989, Air Devices, Inc. was acquired by Hart & Cooley. Air Devices - located in Huntsville, Alabama - manufactured grilles, registers, diffusers, and terminal units under the trade names Agitair, Buensod, and BarbAire. Air Devices serviced the commercial plan/spec market through manufacturers representatives. Tuttle & Bailey was separated from Hart & Cooley, Inc., placed under the Air System Components Group (subsidiary of Tomkins Industries, Inc.), and relocated to Richardson, Texas in February 2000.
