ValveWatch utilizes advanced technology to remotely monitor valves and actuators, detecting problems before they impact production. How It Works The ValveWatch system incorporates sensors attached on or near the valve and actuator assembly to routinely monitor and record their performance. Strain sensors and actuator pressure sensors monitor valve & actuator performance during operation, while dynamic pressure sensors and acoustic sensors monitor the valve for internal seat leaks. Together, these sensors provide operators an automated checkup on the condition of the valve and actuator package. The strain sensor and actuator pressure sensor provide valuable diagnostic data each time the valve strokes. The strain sensor is permanently bonded to the valve yoke adapter and records the force applied to the valve by the actuator during a valve stroke. Problems with valve operation, including damage to certain components, are readily detected using data taken from this sensor. An actuator pressure sensor mounted to the actuator supply line records the change in actuator pressure throughout the valve stroke. Damage to the actuator or a problem with the actuator air or hydraulic supply can be detected using this sensor. The actuator pressure sensor is also used to determine when the valve changes position, causing ValveWatch to initiate a valve stroke test. For ball valve and slab gate valve designs with sealed cavities, dynamic pressure sensors are used to test the valves for leaking valve seats. Unlike other methods of leak detection that require valves to be closed for testing, ValveWatch allows operators to monitor and identify leakage while valves are open and production is flowing. This innovative technology gives operators the ability to trend valve seal performance and proactively plan for maintenance or repair. Two dynamic pressure sensors are used: one installed in the valve cavity and one installed upstream or downstream of the valve. During a typical leak test 60,000 readings are taken from each of these sensors. They record the fluid oscillation in the sealed valve cavity, and compare the frequency and amplitude to the oscillations to those measured in the upstream or downstream flow. As the signals become similar in shape and amplitude operators are immediately warned of a potential seat leak. For valves without a sealed cavity an ultrasonic sensor is installed downstream of the valve. The valve must be stroked closed, and a slight differential pressure is applied across the valve seat to detect a leak. If the valve seats are leaking, high-frequency noise generated by the gas or liquid media passing through the seat will be detected by this sensor. Data is collected from the sensors by the Local Data Acquisition Unit (LDAU) Assembly which consists of an IP66 weather proof box containing several modules installed as close as possible to the valve. The standard system includes two Strain/AC modules and a Communications Module. The strain channel monitors signals from the strain and static pressure sensors, and the AC channels handle the dynamic pressure sensors. The signals are conditioned and converted to digital in the sensor modules and passed to the Communications Module for wireless or data-over-power transmission to a HUB Assembly. The LDAU Assembly and the sensors are intrinsically safe and are certified according to North American and European standards for installation in Zone 0 areas. An additional communications and Ethernet module are housed in the HUB Assembly along with all the power supply, terminal strips, and intrinsically safe barriers. The HUB assembly is rack mounted in a safe area (Zone 2) or equipment room. Each Hub assembly can be configured to monitor up to eight valves. An Ethernet cable connects the HUB to a server where the data is stored, transmitted, and then analyzed for leakage. All the test results and data are stored in a secure Oracle database application. ValveWatch collects data from the dynamic pressure sensors on a scheduled interval or when the valve strokes, while data from the other sensors is recorded only when the valve strokes. For leak tests using dynamic pressure sensors, the system software performs the leakage calculations using patented algorithms that run automatically. The test results are compared to pre-established limits, and alarms warn operators of degrading seal conditions. For valve stroke tests, data taken from each sensor is compiled into a signature and compared against a baseline signature taken under “normal” conditions. Irregularities in valve signatures are identified and analyzed to determine the source of the valve or actuator problem. A simple web interface allows easy access to the system status from any location. Detailed be......Varec was founded in the greater Los Angeles area, California in 1928. Throughout our history, we have continuously refined our position as a market and industry leader by introducing new products and systems. Detailed below is a brief timeline of our development. For a more specific history of FuelsManager® software development, . 1940 - In those early days as a pioneer in the oil and gas industry, we designed and manufactured many of the first bulk-storage tank fittings and accessories. We developed a mechanical float and tape level measurement gauge specifically for tank gauging in the oil and gas industry. It was through this development that Varec worked closely with the American Petroleum Institute (API) to write the first API Standard for level measurement of hydrocarbons in above ground storage tanks. 1950 - The Varec brand name had become synonymous with tank gauging. Varec was then supplying a complete tank gauging and vapor control package, including gauges, pipe fittings, breather valves and flame arresters. A number of companies had begun manufacturing copies of the popular Varec products, but the Varec brand was so strong and the copies looked so similar, customers referred to them as “Varec” gauges. This is still true today. We had experienced tremendous growth and were supporting installed units worldwide, across various markets, such as petrochemical, food & beverage and pharmaceuticals. Our 2500 Automatic Tank Gauge (ATG), which was being controlled by a negator motor, had been installed on over 5,000 storage tanks and was also being manufactured under license in Paris and Lancashire (the industrial heart of England). Inventories of our ATG products were maintained in New York, Cleveland, Chicago and Houston. Varec had 22 sales representatives throughout the United States, eight in Canada and 17 in various other countries. In the 1950s, the United States saw tremendous growth in its telecommunications industry and Varec engineers moved in line with this trend by developing the first “Pulse Code System”. This early digital solution used telephone lines and included an electronic tank gauge transmitter, selector and receiver. It also supported temperature measurement, positive displacement meter readings, pump and valve control and status indication. Varec engineers worked with local telephone companies to install the correct wiring to enable the transmission of level, temperature, pressure and alarm signals to the central control room. 1960 through 1980s - Throughout the 1960s, Varec continuously refined its position as a market and industry leader by introducing many new products and accessories. During the next 20 years, Varec’s success attracted other global companies looking to increase their own strength in the instrumentation business. In 1974, Emerson Electric acquired Varec and, in 1986, consolidated its instrument companies under the company name Rosemount. Operating then as “Varec, a Division of Rosemount”, with production facilities in California and a worldwide sales channel, Varec maintained global recognition and respect for its tank gauging products and services. 1990 - Throughout the 1990s, the British Whessoe Group had made a number of strategic acquisitions to build and maintain a leadership position in the marine tanker and tank farm inventory management systems markets. It was due to Varec’s notability and a comparable product range that the Whessoe Group of Companies purchased Coggins Systems in 1990 and Varec in 1992. The Atlanta-based company, Coggins Systems, founded in 1978, was a software developer, hardware manufacturer, systems integrator and turnkey solutions provider. Coggins Systems specialized in developing and manufacturing software, industrial computer systems and intelligent interface products for a number of different markets. The instrumentation and control systems designed for the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) Program laid the groundwork for the company’s future in the oil and gas industry. For some time, Varec was also developing products, such as TankView and the Tank Scanning Unit, that complemented Coggins’ strong software and systems capability. In 1993, Coggins and Varec were again at the forefront of technological developments when Coggins’ FuelsManager® software was released in conjunction with Microsoft’s Windows NT operating system. The following year, 1994, Coggins’ 8130 RTU (Remote Terminal Unit) was released - a truly open system interface for automatic tank gauging, the first of its kind in the world. With the combination of software, interface devices and tank gauges, these two like-minded companies became the market leaders in ‘open’ systems and solutions with the largest worldwide installed base for tank gauging and inventory management software. 1997 - Endress+Hauser - the largest privately owned process instrumentation company - purchased the Whessoe group of companies, including Varec and Coggins Systems. Endress+Hauser saw this acquisition as a stepping stone into the oil and gas industry, a very different market to the process industries in which it had experience. Each company continued to operate independently, but now had access to new technologies that were integrated into the tank gauging product lines, most notably radar and servo tank gauges. 2000 - Varec was merged with Coggins Systems and the Varec operations in California were relocated to Atlanta, where we still develop and manufacture software, interfaces, tank gauges, transmitters and a full line of accessories. Over the next two years, we added a new line of high accuracy radar tank gauges (RTGs). We then tested and certified FuelsManager and the 8130 RTU to international approval standards, specifically for high accuracy (custody transfer) applications in the oil and gas industry. This certification included their integration with Varec radar and servo tank gauges, as well as other manufacturers’ certified instruments. Also in 2000, we acquired the UK-based Synergix, an aviation market leader. Synergix’s software and systems assisted fuel agents and service providers at airports in managing fuel related activities, such as dispatch and into-plane operations. Coggins Systems’ defense aviation expertise combined with Synergix’s commercial aviation offering firmly established Varec as the aviation fuels management market leader. Today - Today, operating as Varec, we continue our 75-year tradition of working toward true open systems, supplying integrated hardware and software solutions to the customers we serve. The Varec FuelsManager® suite of industry solutions has been a longtime standard in the oil and gas and defense markets, as well as other inventory management related industries. Today, FuelsManager Aviation is the system of choice for the aviation industry. Varec’s TankView software provides inventory management capabilities that are suitable for non-oil and gas applications as well, such as water, wastewater, food, beverage, chemical or petrochemical.

The production facility in Rome, New York employs 100 people and, after its most recent expansion in 2000, occupies over 140,000 square feet. Through the years, Varflex has pioneered a number of major developments in sleeving design and production. Not only was Varflex the first to braid fiberglass sleeving and use silicone varnishes to coat them, Varflex has continued to develop new kinds of sleeving that play vital roles in many types of electrical equipment and aircraft in both the commercial and military markets. Sleeving is an essential component of any electrical machine, motor or appliance and, in response to customer demand within these vast market areas, Varflex has developed an array of insulating sleevings that are available in a variety of sizes and colors, in coils, cut lengths or on spools. Varflex manufactures electrical insulating sleevings that are suitable for high and low temperatures, high and low voltages, as well as for abrasive and other physically demanding applications and hostile environments. The voltage and temperature ratings of Varflex sleevings are recognized by UL (Underwriters Laboratories), certified by CSA (CSA International) and meet the requirements of, and are on the QPLs (Qualified Products Lists) for, applicable military specifications. For those applications not satisfied through the use of its standard products, Varflex stands ready to supply special coatings and treatments, extra heavy, double- or triple-wall constructions, as well as special braiding and overbraiding, all of which are done in-house. Although electrical applications are most common, Varflex braided sleevings can also be used to jacket wire, or other small devices, from intense heat, radiative environments, ultraviolet light, abrasion and intermittent exposure to chemicals. More recently, Varflex sleevings are being utilized in many “nontraditional” applications as well. In addition to generating and pursuing new business opportunities, Varflex maintains long-term relationships with many of its customers by continuing to supply them with the highest-quality electrical insulating sleeving and exceptional service.
