Almost 40 years later, the founders are no longer actively involved but the core technologies and business expertise remain embodied in a staff ready to address a diverse set of signal processing and radio frequency design challenges. In 1968, Mr. John W. Ballard, and Drs. E.M.T. Jones and Robert L. Tanner founded TCI to leverage the early use of advanced computer simulation techniques to model the electrical properties and structural characteristics of High Frequency (HF) and AM broadcast band antenna systems. This early engineering orientation served the company well as TCI quickly became known as a world leader in the supply and manufacture of highly reliable HF communications and broadcast antenna systems. TCI has maintained this market position almost 40 years later and its products have been sold to more than 100 countries. TCI antenna systems operate at power levels up to 2 million watts. In the early 1970’s, TCI further refined the use of computer techniques to develop and implement specialized algorithms that dramatically improve the speed and accuracy of HF signal collection and direction finding systems. These systems comprised very large antenna arrays connected to precision, phase-matched radio receivers, whose output was in turn processed by the most sophisticated computer technology available. In 1982, based on the strength and vibrancy of these two complementary product lines, the company went public on the NASDAQ stock exchange. In 1986, TCI acquired BR Communications and its proprietary radio receiver design expertise. These talents find themselves deeply integrated in many of the company’s signal processing system offerings today. During the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, the company experienced strong growth in both its antenna system and signal processing product lines. During the mid 1990’s, the company focused on expanding the frequency range of its systems to VHF, UHF, and microwave frequencies while exploring commercial markets for its products, which initially had been sold to military and intelligence organizations. The most tangible result of these initiatives can be seen in the leading position the company holds today as one of three premier suppliers in the commercial radio spectrum monitoring and compliance market. In 2001, SPX CORPORATION, a 5 billion dollar, multinational provider of Flow Technology, Test and Measurement, Thermal Equipment and Services, and Industrial Products and Services acquired the company.
